Robert Anderson Obituary

Robert E. Anderson

2025

Chicago, IL-Robert, our supremely cerebral and linguistically precocious brother, uncle, great uncle, son and friend, moved on from this world on August 9. He left behind his brother, John, three nieces (Amanda Livnat, Libbie Anderson, and Olivia Anderson), a nephew (John Jr. Anderson) and a great-niece (Talia Livnat). Preceded in death by parents, Professor Robert and Alma Anderson. Robert was a proud graduate of East High School (1974), University of Utah (BA 1978), and University of Chicago (MA in Arabic 1981). Fluent in over twenty foreign languages, Robert had a 44-year career as a professional translator in Chicago. He was, perhaps paradoxically, a devout Catholic, a fervent friend of Israel and all things Jewish, and a secular scholar of Middle Eastern languages and culture. His linguistic prowess extended from Latin to Mandarin Chinese, Hebrew to German, and Dutch to Italian. He was a dazzling conversationalist, a voracious reader, a loving and sentimental brother and uncle. We will love and miss him, always.
