Robert Harmon Obituary

Robert Henry Harmon

1930 - 2021

Salt Lake City, Utah—Robert Henry Harmon was born December 23, 1930, in Ames, Iowa, to Minnie Barbara Oberhansly and Laurence Barnes Harmon. He passed away peacefully at home a few days after his 91st birthday in the early morning of December 26, 2021, with his beloved wife and children close by.

Bob was the youngest of four boys and grew up in Salt Lake City, visiting his grandfather's farm, enjoying neighborhood games, and going on fishing trips with his father. Even though he contracted Perthes Disease in his hip as a child, he never let that interfere with his tennis game as an adult. Bob took a woodworking class in junior high and became intrigued with saws and drills. This hobby contributed years later to the loss of a finger while making Christmas gifts. Grandchildren got a kick out of him raising a hand and saying, "Give me four!" His teenage years often found him with his favorite cousin, Gordon Allred, who was his companion for fun, adventure, hard work, and root beer.

After graduating as a ping pong champion from East High School in 1948, he attended the University of Utah, where he joined the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, graduating with a degree in Business and Accounting. He earned an MBA at UCLA, which led to a career in estate planning. Bob joined the Home Life Insurance Company, managed the Utah office, and later became an independent agent. He taught his children the value of hard work, which was reflected in the numerous industry awards he received throughout his career, including membership in the Million Dollar Round Table for 40 consecutive years.

While at the U of U, he met a beautiful Chi Omega named Carolee Larsen and it was love at first sight. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple in August 1955 and raised their five children in Salt Lake City. They loved to travel and created cherished memories in Jackson Hole, the Canyonlands, and Lake Powell. He was generous with his time and resources. One of the most important things to him was being with his family and providing meaningful experiences for them. Evenings were spent at the beloved family cabin at Brighton, where countless hamburgers were loaded with Heinz ketchup. Bob loved Carolee's pumpkin chiffon pie, Mountain Dew, a good card game, and "getting out and doing something," especially if that included a cruise.

As a young man, Bob fulfilled a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Australia. This experience helped to provide the foundation for his testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and he continued to serve in many Church callings throughout his life. He and Carolee loved serving as public affairs missionaries in Germany and areas across Europe.

We thrill at the thought of Bob reuniting with his parents and older brothers - Larry, Hal, and particularly his older brother Kent who was killed in WWII, as well as two grandchildren, Emily and Eric Hansen. We know our dad will be happiest when his wife of 66 years can join him. Bob is survived by his wife Carolee, his children David (Nancy) Harmon, Christine (Tyler) Sheffield, Pamela (Mark) Hansen, Jill (Andy) Zaharias, and Holly (Bryan) Webster. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, with two on the way.

We will miss hearing him greet us with his kind words of love. Appreciative, uncomplaining, and tender until the very end, Bob was a true gentleman.

A private graveside service for the family was held on December 30, 2021, at Sunset Lawn in Salt Lake City, Utah. A celebration of Bob's life will take place at a later date.

This is a time for celebration of the life of our good friend and neighbor. We just finished writing a note for Carolee that is for Bob also. He was a very capable and professional insurance man who was also a very caring and loving friend and next-door neighbor, and our families were as one. We served in church assignments together, travelled together with full families, and in later years travelled as couples to Europe, Mexico, Hawaii, St George. and other. He is now with his eternal companion Carolee who joined him a few days after his transfer. Our love to their children, David, Chris, Pam, Jill, and Holly.

Bob Harmon played a major part in my life. In 1961 at my missionary farewell, Bob attended as a great friend of my father who worked with Bob at Home Life. He pulled me aside after the meeting and gave me his business card and told me he wanted me to come and meet with him as soon as I got home. (TWO YEARS away). The last thing on my mind was a job in two years. 6 months before my release I got a letter from Bob, the first one he ever wrote to me, and reminded me to come in a meet with him as soon as I got home. After getting home, I went in and he offered me a job as a clerical person for 20 hours a week and I could work any 20 hours I wanted based on my college class schedule at the U of U. I could not sell insurance without my college degree and so I spend 3 1/2 years doing just that. After graduation, he hired me as an agent. I wanted to go into Management and Bob helped me get there. I was able to move to LA as the Assistant Regional VP for Home Life's Western Region, the only region of the company that was not housed in the New York City Home Office. After 3 years Bob asked me to come back to SLC as his Associate Manager and asked me to build my own unit of sales people. I spent 18 years with Home Life and had a wonderful relationship with both Bob and Carolee. I last saw Bob at the viewing for my daughter, Marci, who passed away 4 years ago this past December 27th. I can envision the wonderful homecoming that is going on in Heaven right now. What a blessing that Bob and Carolee could pass so close to each other. What a way to go. Love to all of Bob's wonderful family. Joe Lake

Memories of Bob permeate my whole life as my "young Uncle Bob" was always so vibrant and young. I got to go on my first airplane trip to CA to see them when I was 5 with my Dad and we went to Disneyland and enjoyed their hospitality. This began a lifetime of supportive and encouraging exchanges from my uncle. He gave me a 50 cent piece when I was baptized. He came to my play performances. He gave my husband his first job at Home Life and mentored him in insurance. He was a huge supporter of my family. I will miss him terribly. But I am so grateful for his life and legendary love story with Carolee. He endured well.

I just became aware today that my dear friend, Bob Harmon, passed away last week. 50 years ago (1971), I graduated from law school. My law practice has been primarily focused on tax, business, and estate planning matters. One of the first professionals that I met through the Salt Lake Estate Planning Council was Bob Harmon of Home Life. It was my pleasure to have dozens of common clients with Bob over these many years. In addition to being a very happy and pleasant person, he was also extremely capable and meticulous within the life insurance profession. Even though I have not seen Bob for these last few years, he was still very sharp into his mid-80's as we continued to service our common clients together. I will miss him dearly, and offer my most sincere sympathy and condolences to his family and friends. Jay Curtis
