Robert Shuping Obituary

Robert Fulton Shuping Jr.

1927 ~ 2024

Robert Fulton "Mattox" Shuping, Jr., 96, a devoted family man and life-long golf enthusiast, died peacefully on June 30, 2024, with his loving wife, JoAnn, by his side.

Bob, an only child, was born on August 1, 1927, to Georgia Espy and Robert Fulton Shuping. Sr. in Wichita, KS. He attended High School in Kirkwood, MO and Washington University in St. Louis, MO.

Throughout Bob's life, he was happiest while on the golf course, snow skiing in the mountains, hunting for railroad or mining antiques and/or listening to Frank Sinatra. While working at Frigidaire in St. Louis, MO he met the love of his life, Delores "JoAnn" Stoddard, a native of Fairview Heights, IL. They married and had three children; Michelle Hawes, Michael Shuping and Tracy Jeffs.

Bob's career as General Sales / Plant Manager at General Refractories (the only company in North America that produced silica brick for steel companies) took the family from Chicago, IL, to St. Louis, MO and then to Provo, UT.

While living in St. Louis, Bob became the mayor of a small community, Crystal Lake Park (where a street was named after him "Mattox Court") then taking his leadership talents to Provo, UT he became President of Riverside Country Club and was named Boss of the Year in 1972 by the Timp Valley Chapter of the National Secretaries Association. While living in Provo, Bob made sure that his family learned how to ski at Sundance Ski Resort, play golf at Riverside CC and enjoy the outdoor wonders of Utah.

Upon Bob's retirement from General Refractories in 1993, he and JoAnn moved to Peoria, AZ. They quickly became members of Union Hills Country Club where they made many dear friends and enjoyed retirement to its fullest, playing golf, traveling and visiting family.

Bob will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend who always had a smile on his face, a heartfelt laugh, effervescent personality and was ready to make anyone a cocktail.

Bob is survived by his wife, JoAnn currently in Salt Lake City, his three children Michelle & Bob Hawes (Suncadia, WA), Michael Shuping & Thom Sawyer (Salt Lake City, UT) and Tracy & Rob Jeffs (American Fork, UT), six grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren.

I just loved visiting with Bob and Jo when I worked at The Wellington. He was always so friendly and we chatted quite often. My condolences to Jo and his children.
