Scott Allison Gates

SHENYANG, China — Scott A. Gates, 50, passed away suddenly of an unexpected illness on Friday, July 31, 2009, in Shenyang, China. He had lived in Shenyang for the past two years and previously resided in Meadville since 1973.Scott was born Oct. 2, 1958, in Des Moines, Iowa, a son of Merlin A. and E. Kay Gates. He married Constance M. Gainor on Feb. 16, 1980, and subsequently married Liu Yan Hiu in the fall 2008.Scott was a 1977 graduate of Meadville Area Senior High School and received a degree in computer programming from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. He was currently working as an English teacher at an English-language school through the Shenyang Agricultural University in Shenyang. He had made many new friends and was well respected by his students and their families. Previously he worked at both 84 Lumber and Dad's Pet Products in Meadville.During his time in Meadville, Scott was active in the community, serving on the boards of the Vernon Township Water Authority, YMCA MYST Swim Team, Meadville Area Senior High School Swim Boosters, and was active in Meadville Elks Lodge 219.Scott was most proud of his children, Joshua Scott, Jacklyn Marie and Melissa Sue.Scott is survived by his wife, Liu Yan Hiu of China; his parents, Merlin and Kay Gates of Goldsboro, N.C.; a son, Joshua Scott Gates of Meadville; two daughters, Melissa Sue McIntosh and her husband, Thomas, of Cambridge Springs, and Jacklyn Marie Gates of Seeheim, Germany; two sisters, Krista Gates of Apex, N.C., and Tracy Anderson and her husband, Dean, of Goldsboro, N.C.; a nephew, Justin, and niece, Taylor.A memorial service will be conducted at the convenience of the family.
