Sid Garret

Sidney Gordon Garrett, 88, died Saturday, February 2, 2013 at the Logan Regional Hospital from causes incident to old age.
Sid was born January 27, 1925 in Logan, Utah, to William Barnes and Leona Hugie Garrett, and was the second of eight children. In 1930, the family moved to Preston, ID, where Sid was raised. One week before his 18th birthday, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy officer training program, at the University of Idaho. He served 3 1/2 years in the Navy and attained the rank of Lt./JG. He was an all-around athlete in high school and played college football and basketball. He was also an avid and lifelong golfer. He returned home from the Navy in 1946 and enrolled at Utah State University on a football scholarship. In 1947, he continued his schooling under the GI Bill at Idaho State University, graduating in 1949 with a degree in Business Administration.
In September, 1949, Logan LDS Hospital hired him as Business Manager and promoted him to Administrator in 1956. In 1972, he was assigned to Administer Cottonwood Hospital in Salt Lake City. In 1976, he was assigned to the first management team for Intermountain Health Care and served as a Vice-President in the IHC Corporate office until his retirement in 1984. He returned to Cache Valley and served as Director of the Foundation Fund until 1990. He was a board member of the Logan Hospital Credit Union for many years.
Sid married Lois Van Noy on March 19, 1947, in Elko, Nevada. Their marriage was sealed in the Logan LDS Temple on March 19, 1964. They had two boys, David Jay and Richard Sidney Garrett, and adopted a daughter, Jan Louise. The children are deceased. Lois died in 1969, and Sid married Joann G. Archibald in 1972. She died in 1983. He married Jenele Griffin in
1998.
Sid is survived by his wife, Jenele, Smithfield; two daughters-in-law, Pat Garrett, Draper; and Jolene (Stephen) Jolley, Sandy; and three step-children, Ron Griffin, Ogden; Susan (Reed) Heslop, Pleasant View; and Carol (David) Hoffmann, Clinton.
Sid is survived by 10 grandchildren, Tyler (Becky) Garrett, Camarillo, CA; Brooke (Jed) Burton, Salt Lake City; Parker Garrett, Salt Lake City; Matthew (Michelle) Garrett, Farmington; Amber (Bryan) Wood, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA; Justin (Christine) Garrett, Cottonwood Heights; Jeremy (Tawnya) Garrett, Salt Lake City; Jessica Garrett, Brooklyn, NY; Sydney (Andrew) Enloe, Sandy; and Christopher Eby, CA.
Sid is survived by 10 Step-grandchildren, Marie (Joseph) Dougherty, Clinton; Laura (Beau) Brewer, Bountiful; Jaclyn (Brian) Wood, Bountiful; Bryant Griffin, American Fork; Colette (Spencer) Banks, Baltimore, MD; Blake Heslop, Ogden; Brian, Greg, and Colter Hoffmann,
Clinton; and Michael Hoffmann, serving in the England Birmingham Mission.
Sid was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Dale, Conrad, Jack, Joan and Bruce.
He is survived by a sister, Judy (Steven) Porter, and brother, Jim Garrett, Preston, ID. He is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Alta Garrett, Kaysville; Karma Garrett and Marcene (Ted) Steers, Preston, ID. He has 16 great-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren.
Sid served in the LDS Church in many capacities including Sunday School president and teacher, Young Men's advisor, Elder's Quorum president, Ward clerk, High Priest group leader, Home teacher, and two Bishoprics. He performed much Temple work after
retirement and served a full-time mission at Church headquarters and on Temple Square.
Sid and Jenele cherished their years together, traveling extensively, doing Temple work, wintering in St. George and enjoying family and many wonderful friends.
Family members express their gratitude to Dr. Robert Nash and his staff. Dr. Nash has been a kind, caring and thoughtful caregiver to Sid for many years. Family members also express gratitude to the caregivers at Logan Hospital, especially the TCU; and to the many friends and neighbors who have expressed their love and support.
Sid's viewing is Friday, Feb. 8, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home, 162 East 400 North, Logan, Utah. Funeral services are Saturday, Feb. 9, at Noon at the Smithfield 10th Ward, 451 South 250 East, Smithfield, Utah, with a viewing from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Interment in the Logan City Cemetery.
