Steven Day Obituary

April 29, 1955 ~ July 1, 2014
Steven A. Day, 59, passed away peacefully in his Missouri home on Tuesday July 1, 2014. He was born on April 29, 1955 in Fillmore, Utah to James Alexander and Ilene Safford Day. He lived in Layton, Utah as a young boy and throughout most of his adulthood. After graduating from Layton High School he served an LDS mission in France-Belgium and attended the University of Utah where he received a bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering.
Steve married Lynette Kinard and shared many happy years together with their four children. He had a profound influence on the lives of his children and was someone they greatly loved and cherished. He was a delightful grandfather and was quick to play and tease. During his career he worked at Kennecott Copper, Hercules, and ATK. He was well-known and respected among his peers and coworkers.
Steve had a passion in life for stock option trading, smoking meat, watching and participating in sports, and photography. He loved spending time outdoors and was often found fly fishing, camping, boating, and gardening. Steve was an avid do-it-yourselfer and it was never a surprise to see him under the hood of the car or working on home projects or repairs. He has always liked unique hobbies, some of which included mining for gold, metal detecting, tying his own fishing flies, or cultivating his own mushrooms.
Following his divorce, Steve moved to Missouri. While living there, he retired from ATK and married Irina Wachstetter, who brought him great joy in the last few years of his life. He enjoyed retirement and spent time traveling and playing golf. Steve was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend and will be greatly missed by many.
He is preceded in death by his daughter, Heather Day, his brother, Mike Day, and his parents. Steve is survived by his wife, Irina, his children Jaimi (West) Brewer, Tyler (Melanie) Day, Tiffany (Paul) Wilhelm, his step-children Kristina Sadovnikova and Sophia Wachstetter, 11 grandchildren, his former wife Lynette (Jerry) Smith, and siblings Cary (Sherrie) Day and Dianna (David) Evans.
Steve taught his family many life lessons, one of which is to leave things better than they were found. He has done just this and has left this world better than he found it.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Lindquist's Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family Monday, July 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9 to 9:45 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Fillmore City Cemetery at 3 p.m. in Fillmore, Utah.

Whenever I stand alongside a river or push my boat away from the dock I always remember the adventures we had and wish they could be relived. In many respects they are; thru the many stories I related to my kids and will tell to my grandkids. Friends forever buddy!

Fortunate is the person who during his lifetime has one special friend who shares his world view. To me Steve was that person. We grew up together during the 60's and initiated countless adventures which began at Idaho Street and spread to Island Park, the Tetons and Glacier Nat'l. Park. Although in later years distance separated us, we always had a strong bond of friendship that reached across states. I will very much miss receiving his calls and hearing his voice speaking, "Hey, Thompson, what is going on?" My deepest condolences to his family.

Steve,

You left us all too soon. As a co-worker and friend, and last but not least, the best man at my wedding, I will miss your antics, humorous stories, the long talks but I will never forget the memories we forged over the last 30 years. I'm glad we had that dinner together last fall. Little did I know it would be our last. It was good to see your family today, they are all wonderful people and you can be proud of each and every one of them. I hope you check out all of the good fishing holes over there on the other side. I will be looking forward to a guided trip to them someday. Until then, I'll be missing you.

I recall working with Steve at Hercules in the late 80's. Haven't seen him in years. A great person and co-worker. Sorry to hear he has left us.
