Susan Larsen Obituary

Susan Brim Larsen

1940 - 2025

Salt Lake City, UT - Susan returned to her Heavenly Father, February 21, 2025, hoping to be together with her husband Shirrell L. Larsen, to whom she was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple, February 2, 1968. She was born August 24, 1940, in Oakland, California, and lived with her parents, Douglas Brim and Winifred Nye Brim and her two brothers, Doug and Fred, and her sister, Carol, in San Francisco. When her mother became ill, she came to live in Salt Lake City with her beloved great aunt, Elizabeth Harding. She was baptized at the age of 8 and has since been a faithful and active member of her church.

In her twenties, Susan attended the University of Utah after graduating from East High; received a B.A. in French/business (1962) and an M.A. in French literature/philosophy (1967). While attending college, she studied piano, and she also worked part-time using her shorthand and typing skills. In 1965, while taking classes, she met her future husband, Shirrell, who was teaching logic at the U. She also studied abroad in Quebec (1960) and in Paris twice, 1961 including during a memorable 1963-64 year (with her friend Marlena) of European train travel, Sorbonne study, staying with a French family, museums, parks, and operas. She also taught French at Hillcrest High, Bountiful Jr., and Rowland Hall-St. Mark's School. In her 30s, she started work as a career counselor and continued until she retired in 2009 as Assistant Director of the University of Utah Career Services office, interrupted for some leisure time, and also work in Career Services at Rutgers (New Jersey), and a year as a public relations assistant at the Utah Symphony.

Susan and Shirrell were able to enjoy 12 unhurried trips to Western Europe in the 1980s and 1990s, and also frequently traveled to NYC and California, enriching their minds and enlivening their spirits, while also enjoying their home and pets. In 2010, Susan became a full-time and devoted caregiver for her husband before his death, June 29, 2013. She is survived by her siblings, Doug Brim, Fred Brim, and Carol Sike, cousins, and many nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held Friday, February 28th, 2025, from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E 1300 S, Salt Lake City, Utah, and a graveside service Saturday, March 1st at 10:00 am at Willard City Cemetery, 470 Main Street, Willard, Utah.

The family wishes to thank Susan's caregivers at Huntsman Hospital and Huntsman at Home Hospice. -
