Thomas Beyersdorf Obituary

Thomas Reed Beyersdorf

1946 - 2020

Thomas Reed Beyersdorf, a.k.a. The Wallet, passed away at his home in West Jordan on December 20, 2020 at age 74 after a year of declining health. Tom was born October 1, 1946 to Orville and Bernadine Beyersdorf in Spokane, Washington. Tom spent his childhood working with his dad and brothers in the family instrument repair shop and enjoying summers at the family lake cabin and boat trips with the Boat Club. He was educated in the Spokane area and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering from Washington State University (the good cougars).

Tom moved to Utah post graduation to accept a position with Kennecott Copper at the Smelter mainly working in the acid plant. He retired from Kennecott after 42 years.

Tom's hobbies included reading manuals, electronics and computers and gadgets, spreadsheets, label makers, you get the jist (nerd). One of his greatest joys was taking his family for an annual summer vacation to the lake cabin for boating, water sports, dragging the kids around the lake, eating our weight in M&Ms and to work on our family sport, floating. The summer trips were the highlight of our year and a great reunion with the Beyersdorf family. Tom's quick wit and dry humor always made him the best seat mate at a family event.

Tom was introduced by blind date and married Loraine Penrod in 1977. Tom loved his in-laws the Penrod Family. Even you, Spencer. The Beyersdorfs resided in West Jordan for 40 years. Tom truly enjoyed time with his family and worked hard to provide a great life for his wife and children, Jill and Russell. But his time to really shine came with the arrival of his grandkids. Nothing made Tom happier than holding his grandbabies for every nap and spoiling them rotten while awake. They could do nothing wrong. He was the best Papa.

Tom is survived by his wife of 43 miserable long years, Loraine Beyersdorf; children Jill (Clint) Smith, and Russ (Mackenzie) Beyersdorf; grandchildren Mariah Smith and Mason Smith; brother Steve (Sarah) Beyersdorf, and sisters in law Sharon Beyersdorf and Dorothy Beyersdorf; cousins Dave Sheldon and MaryJo Wright. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Beverly Lyson, Gary Beyersdorf, and Paul Beyersdorf. Tom's wit and humor will be greatly missed by many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and extended family.

A graveside service will be held later this year. Donuts will be served.

Thanks for all your mentoring and teaching when I was a young engineer at the Smelter. Tom was a great fun to be around with the right mix of sarcasm and very sound advice.
