Thomas Manatos Obituary
Thomas N. Manatos "Uncle Tommy, Poppy" Thomas N. Manatos, born December 21, 1919, passed away peacefully June 3, 2004 after a prolonged illness. Tom was born in Rock Springs, Wyoming to Nick and Anna Manatos. He attended and graduated from Rock Springs High School in 1937. He then graduated from the University of Wyoming with a Degree in Mathematics in 1941. He served as a lieutenant in the Third Army, during World War II. After returning to Wyoming, Tom began what was to be his 40-year mission and first love - teaching. Tom began his teaching career in Reliance, Wyoming and then became one of the pillars in education at Rock Springs High School, teaching three generations of students. Heaven help the student who did not complete his homework, folded his paper crooked, and had his shirttail out. His second love was of Wyoming Cowboy and Rock Springs High School sports. Known as "voice of the Tigers" for approximately 20 years, he broadcast both football and basketball games on the radio. It was once said that he possessed an "encyclopedic knowledge" of Wyoming sports. Tom enjoyed spending time with all his friends in Rock Springs whether golfing, having coffee in the Church basement or spending the day and shooting some pool with his friends at the Senior Citizens Center. He will always be remembered for his love of a good ball game and a great piece of pie! Tommy is preceded in death by his sister, Tina Mamalis and his brothers Andrew Manatos and Mike Manatos. He is survived by his sister Sylvia Johannesen (Florida), his brother George (Budge) Manatos (California), and sister-in-law Dorothy Manatos (Washington, D.C.). His is also survived by his "children" Nick (Mercy) Mamalis (Utah), Pete Mamalis (California), George Mamalis (Leslie Anne) (Colorado), Elaine (David) Hatfield (Pennsylvania), Kathy (Bruce) Shand (Utah), Anne Manatos (D.C), Andrew (Tina) Manatos (Maryland), Virginia Manatos (California); his "grandchildren" Tina Mamalis, Kevin and Katie Hatfield, Dori, Nathan, Rebecca and Robert Shand, Julie (Nick) Mikalis, Chuck (Daisy) Hatsis, Lisa (Bobby) Dinsmore, Chris Ranta, Mike and Laura Manatos, Nick and Despina Manatos, Tom Manatos, George Manatos; and eight "great-grand- children". Friends may call in Salt Lake on Sunday, June 6, 2004, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Trisagion at 7:00 p.m. at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary or in Rock Springs on Tuesday, June 8, 2004, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Vase Funeral Home. Funeral service will at held June 9, 2004 at 12:00 noon at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Rock Springs, Wyoming. Interment Rock Springs Cemetery.
