William Browning Obituary

William (Bill) Moyle Browning

1931-2021

Salt Lake City, Utah —William (Bill) Moyle Browning passed away peacefully at home on April 25, 2021 at the age of 89.

Son of Allie Preston Moyle and Harold Walker Browning, he was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on August 7, 1931. He attended the University of Utah and was a proud member, and President, of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Bill graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Architecture in 1957 and later became a partner of the architectural firm, Scott, Louie and Browning. During an impressive architecture career, he created many highly respected works in the Salt Lake Valley including the Steiner American Building, J.C. Penney Building, Fifth Judicial Circuit Courts, and the Eaton-Kenway Building.

In honor of his many achievements in architecture, Bill received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Utah Chapter of the American Institute of Architects in 2007.

Although architecture was his career and he achieved much honor and success from it, his life-long passion was flying. Since childhood, Bill was intrigued with airplanes. He earned a private pilot license and was President of the Soaring Society of Utah in 1970. Soon after, he purchased a Piper Cub and later a Christen Husky, both of which he flew to Alaska numerous times where he enjoyed documenting his adventures with photography.

In 1959 he married Diane Gilbert and had three children, Michael G. Browning, Salt Lake City, David W. Browning, Salt Lake City and Kathleen (Philip) Richardson, Phoenix, AZ.

After Diane's death, Bill married Ann Castleton Blackner in 2004.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, brother Richard Browning, sister Marcia Dreyer, wife Diane Browning. Survived by wife Ann Blackner, children, and grandchildren Alison, Erica and John.

Bill will be remembered for encouraging others to pursue their passions, for his humility in his own achievements and his remarkable integrity and reputation.

We met when he was teaching at the U in 1962, he brought me to Scott & Louie and taught me more about architecture than anybody. We flew and camped in southern Utah and Alaska, and designed a house together in Wyoming. We flew the Husky and we flew the glider. A significant friend and mentor in my life. He will be greatly missed.

What a privilege it was to know Bill. I knew him in college when I dated one of his friends and when he visited my roommates and me on a regular basis. After Diane's death, he married a dear friend of ours, Ann Castleton Blackner, so our friendship continued. I always enjoyed Bill's conversation; always witty, often biting, and usually cynical, but with humor. Bill had a good and long life, but it saddens me to acknowledge that his journey has come to an end. Ashby also sends his condolences to Ann & their families. RIP, Bill. Long-time friend, fraternity brother and comrade in arms. I will miss the man, the lunches, the conversations, the many laughs and the friendship. One of the best. He will be remembered and missed. Jan and I send our love to Anne and the family. RIP my friend.

We are so sorry to hear about Bill’s passing. I enjoyed the conversations about the work he did on the building earlier in his career and appreciated his humor and grace. He will be missed. With deepest condolences, Jason and Laura Butler
