When I was a young kid my Heroes were always the biggest the fastest the toughest the strongest and so forth. Needless to say Bill was a hero for me. As I matured and became a follower of Jesus my criteria for a hero changed. Solid character became the # 1 reason for looking up to someone . My childhood heroes no longer merited admiration . That's when I realized what a real hero Bill was. He was one of the rare people that you could look up to for a lifetime. A true brother and friend. He was a pillar in my life and always will be.
To say I miss him is a gross understatement . He was a beautiful person and I love him dearly.

Having just heard the sad news recently, our sympathy and condolences go out to the big Kail family for their loss.
Growing up in Brookline, I had only heard of the legendary exploits of the Kail Clan. But getting to know Bill in Peters Township in the 90's was truly a great experience, where Bill and son Joe coached my sons in PT midget football. He was a presence on that field, and the kids listened, learned, and looked up to him. Other coaches screamed and yelled. Bill didn't have to do that to get their attention. He smiled and taught. Bill taught my sons football technique and discipline, but he taught them sportsmanship, integrity, teamwork, and how to have fun. Obviously, Bill and Chris have instilled in their own children the same qualities and his legacy lives on in the next Kail generations. His life course, character, the heartfelt comments already expressed, and Bill's many contributions in our community, give credence to Ecclesiastes 7: 1 as the lasting gift he has given his special family—a good name.

(I met Bill when I was a Gamma at Clarion. I posted this in FaceBook.)Perhaps it's that time of year or that time in my life, but I don't like it, not one damn bit. I rage against it, I curse it, I deny it, I pray for it to be undone, but to no avail. I can intellectualize it but acceptance is a long time away.
The Specter of death has crossed my path three times in recent months. First was my childhood friend, constant companion and truest friend, Chuck Fox. He was always jovial, kind, helpful and the center of attention. He owned the room.
The next loss was my own flesh and blood, my daughter Shannon. She was bright, beautiful, ambitious and adventurous. She blazed her own trail in Alaska, Nevada and San Diego. She was fearless and took on every task in her path. She seemed to have made it to the ideal place. She had graduated from nursing school in Nevada, had secured an ER nursing position in one of the most prestigious hospitals in San Diego and was within driving distance of her brother and her niece. But her decades long struggle with chronic depression and personality disorder led her to take her life last month.
The most recent loss was a man I haven't had contact with in 40 years, but affects me nonetheless. Bill Kail was not a man who could be considered average by any standard. When he appeared on the campus of Clarion University there were whispers of the hulk walking around the hallways. He had a physique hewn from Redwood trees, arms the size of logs and a body that appeared impervious to pain. He was without doubt the strongest man on campus. I had observed many of his feats – tearing license plates, ripping phone books, eating light-bulbs, benching 400 pounds and more. None could match him.
When his voice snarled it spoke of broken bones, compound fractures and visits to the Emergency Room. But that was not made him a hero in my life, for such things are the handiwork of villains as well. It all went back to a week during mid-terms when he was studying next door in our frat house. I was told he was spending the night and wanted to meet him. I saw my frat brother leave his room and head for the shower, so I thought I would go next door and introduce myself to Bill. When I entered the room I saw this massive hulk kneeling down next to a bed praying the rosary. The look he gave, as he turned his head, let you know he was about his Father's business.
I returned later and began a long friendship. We talked often, sometimes jovial, sometimes raucous, sometimes profane and sometimes sad when he spoke of having his heart broken by a sweet, lovable, kindly young woman. The savage could be laid asunder with a word from a caring, loving woman.
It was these qualities that taught me what being a good man was all about. He died leaving hundreds of people saddened and missing him. Great people do that, you know. I would normally say, “Godspeed Bill Kail, Godspeed” but it really isn't necessary. He has arrived.
