William "Gary" Young looked great in his Sheriff's uniform. Known for his sense of adventure, he relished his time spent fishing, hunting, and sharing tall tales about his feats. A willing accomplice to adopting strays, building toys and staying up late to watch scary movies, he was the best dad ever. He loved surprising his wife with presents and flowers, fixing up the house and watching TV with his pack of dogs: Maggie, Rocky and Rascal. He possessed a thorough knowledge of firearms. He volunteered his time at the Lee Kay Center, teaching others to love the sport as much as he did, instructing concealed carry permit and hunter safety classes. Gary passed away July 19, 2014 surrounded by his family: his adoring wife, Frances (Perrella) Young, daughter, Amanda Rock and son in law, David Rock. Born on May 2, 1946 to Peg (Hoyle) Young, RN and Command Sgt. Major William F. Young, Gary followed his father's footsteps and joined the Army. After his deployment in Vietnam where he served with his father, he pursued a career in law enforcement. He rose to the rank of Sergeant with the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, working security at the Salt Palace, the Capitol Theater and finally the County Government Office. A private graveside service will be held at the Utah Veterans Memorial Park on Friday, July 25, 2014, at 11:00 a.m.
