Mary Evelyn Downum entered our Lord's nearer presence on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 in Floresville, Texas. Born July 25, 1922 in San Antonio, Texas to Winnie Orlevia Hart and Orvil Ambrose Downum, the owner of Orvil's on South Presa, Mary Evelyn spent most of her life in the San Antonio area. Following her graduation from Brackenridge High School in 1940, she attended Trinity University where she earned a Bachelor's degree in English and a Master's degree in counseling. Her outstanding academic accomplishments received recognition with membership in the honor society of Alpha Chi. She taught both in the Hot Wells and East Central school districts for many years. Active in the East Central community, she was both an early member of the Susanna Dickinson Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and one of the original organizers of the East Central Schools Museum at Boldtville, where she served as a dedicated volunteer and contributor. Mary Evelyn is survived by her two nieces, Priscilla Ann Watkins of Houston, Texas, Sharon Lyn Fink of Austin, Texas, her great nephew Christopher Michael Watkins of Houston, Texas and numerous cousins. The family wishes to thank the staff of Floresville Nursing Center and Odyssey Hospice in San Antonio, Texas for their loving care and devotion to Mary Evelyn.
