Alfreda Poth Obituary

POTH
Alfreda Blanche Carnes Poth went to her eternal reward on Sept. 9, 2012, at the age of 102. She was born on May 24, 1910 in Floresville, Texas to Mary Ann "Mamie" Campbell Carnes and Alfred Burton Carnes. She was a fourth generation Texan and the eldest of eight children. Alfreda's father was the Sheriff of Wilson County, and all of Alfreda's childhood memories revolved around their life at their Floresville jail residence. After her elementary years in Floresville, Alfreda's parents, realizing the importance of education, sent her to Incarnate Word High School in San Antonio where she graduated in 1928. She continued her education and entered Incarnate Word college, where after one year she earned her teaching certificate. Alfreda began her teaching career at Dewees School. She continued teaching for 42 years, teaching at Kasper School for seven years, one year at Darilek and 26 years at Poth Elementary teaching 1st and 3rd grade. In those 42 years of teaching, Alfreda touched the lives of many young children, who still today speak of her influence on them. Alfreda would often say she loved every day of teaching! Alfreda's family was the center of her life. She was married to her husband, Leissner Poth, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville on Dec. 26, 1932. They were blessed with two children, Patricia Ann and Leissner F. Poth Jr. (Fred). Leissner, Patricia and Fred all served as teachers as well. Alfreda was always thoughtful of others. She was an excellent cook and she enjoyed having friends and family gather around her table. She liked nothing better than to be surrounded by her family. Alfreda was blessed with an abundance of friends, whom she cherished. Those special to her included her dear friends made through Blessed Sacrament Church, and the Catholic Daughter Court Anna Poth organized in 1931, to which Alfreda was a charter member. Alfreda's love of bridge also brought her many friends through the organized card games she attended. Alfreda was preceeded in death by her husband, Leissner F. Poth, her parents Burt and Mamie Carnes, and her brothers and sisters, Patty Toman, Tom Carnes, Rosemary Stanley, Burt Carnes, Bob Carnes, John Elizabeth Owens, and Don Carnes.

She is survived by her children: daughter Patricia (Victor Flieller), son Leissner F. "Fred" Poth (Sandra Swierc); her grandchildren: Denise (Mark Doherty), Laurie (Kendall Mielke), Andrea (Ron Stricklin), Michael A. Flieller (Stacy Carel), Lindsay (Greg Lanham), and Leissner F. (Lex) Poth (Kristi Kilgore); and her Great Grandchildren: Alexa, Matthew and Zachary Doherty, Courtney and Erin Mielke, Brielle and Ryan Stricklin, Madelyn, Mason, and Brady Flieller, Katelyn and Leissner F. (Levi) Poth, sister-in-law, Ruth Poth and numerous Carnes and Poth nieces and nephews and their families.

Alfreda lived a life that centered on a strong faith, and a love of family and friends. The family would like to thank the caregivers at the Haven in Stone Oak and the nurses at The Heights on Huebner for their compassion and care of our Mother.

Visitation will begin at 7:00 P.M. Wednesday, and a rosary will be recited at 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, September 12, 2012, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Poth, Texas. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, September 13, 2012, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Poth, followed by interment at Blessed Sacrament Cemetery in Poth, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Blessed Sacrament Church Building Fund, P O Box 339, Poth, Texas 78147.
