Bill Jones Obituary

July 25, 1923 - March 13, 2017
Bill Jones, 93, of San Antonio, Texas passed away Monday, March 13, 2017.

Mr. Jones was born July 25, 1923 in Jennings, OK - one of two children of Mr. and Mrs. Joe and Agnes Jones. Bill and his late sister Mary Elizabeth were raised primarily in Oklahoma City.

From a young age, Mr. Jones took an interest in all things mechanical - from car engines, to airplanes and boats - an interest that he turned into a decades-long career in the automotive business.
After graduating high school, Mr. Jones married Virginia Lou Dubour in 1944.
Shortly after, he joined the Army Air Corps and served as a crew chief aboard Douglas C-47s during World War II in the 349th Troop Carrier Group. He flew missions over North Africa and Europe. He returned to the U S following a crash landing in North Africa in which he was injured in 1945.
In the 1950s, Mr. Jones opened a speed shop in Oklahoma City. Eventually becoming a chief mechanic for two Indianapolis 500 racing teams from 1950 to 1952.
In the mid to late 50's Mr. Jones worked as a district sales manager for Buick and Cadillac divisions of General Motors.
In the 1960's ,Mr. Jones accepted a position as General Service Manager for Inter Continental Motors Corporation, which distributed Volkswagen and Porsche automobiles for five states in the southwestern United States. It was headquartered in San Antonio,Texas.
In 1964,Mr Jones was instrumental in bringing about another Indianapolis 500 race team. It consisted of Charles Urschel, owner of Inter Continental Motors , and his former team owner John Zink of Tulsa,Oklahoma. This eventually led to a third place national standing for Indy car for the Zink-Urschel team.
From 1968 to 1975 ,Mr. Jones owned Autohaus Volkswagen . A Volkswagen dealership on the south side of San Antonio.
Mr. Jones received national recognition for quality restoration of Porsche cars during this time. This led him to found Jones'Autowerks in the late 1970's .He continued in that business for the next 20 years.
He enjoyed traveling in his FMC motor coach with his family, meeting up with a network of racing and Porsche enthusiasts from around the world.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, in 2013.

Back in 2011 I was attending the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 when I came across a rather un-assuming gentleman standing under the grandstands. It was exceptionally hot that day, and so I offered him a cold beverage. We spoke for a few minutes and asked me if I could take him to his house not far from the Speedway. I asked him what his connection to the Indy 500 was for he was wearing an OLD TIMERS 500 hat, given only to those who have dedicated a significant amount of time to the sport of open wheel racing. I finally learned today that this rather un-assuming man was the late great Bill Jones. and the pictures belows are from that very special day over a decade ago. It was great to finally be able to put a name to the face after all these years. Rest in Peace Mr. Jones. you touched me deeply. :)

Bill was meticulous at rebuilding my 356 carbs in 1996. I loved hearing his stories and admired his strong spirit. Hang in there Bob Al Brewster

I'm so sorry to hear about Bill's passing. I was stationed here in San Antonio in the 70s and 80s. I owned several Porsches back then and Bill and Rocky McDougall were tremendous help to a rookie. The things they accomplished was truly amazing especially with the 356's. My condolences to the entire family in the loss of a very special person. Bob DeCardenas MIAMI, Florida.

Bob, we are so sad for you and your family on the loss of your dad. We visited him each time we came to the US over the past 6 years and enjoyed his company so much and the stories of the past.

Bob,
You know the number of years that have passed since we worked together and I must say, it saddens me deeply to know that your dad is gone. In the last 6 months I have been trying to find the time for a visit....I should have just gotten on a plane and made the time!
I am not only happy to have known Bill, but proud!
Sorry for the GREAT loss to your family, the Porsche community, and the racing world.

Mr. Bill Jones was a real inspiration to me . I first met him when he was age 90 ; he was back in the shop building an Offenhauser engine for a restored Indy race car . What a guy ,,We should all be so lucky to have the energy and love of what we do to still be doing it at age 90 . He took the time to tell me of his history in racing .. The man knew everybody that was anybody in the Indy racing world .. He lived his life on his on terms and was a gentleman to the end . Bill has seen his final checkered flag on Earth and is looking forward to that green flag somewhere in the great beyond .. My condolences to his son Bob & his family and all the personnel at Jones Autoworks . He'll be missed ...
