Casey Drawert Obituary

December 17, 1973 - March 11, 2016
Casey Mitchell Drawert, M.D., age 42, a loving mother and dedicated critical care anesthesiologist, died unexpectedly on Friday, March 11, 2016. Casey left this earth too early for us to understand. She was born in Shreveport, LA, on December 17, 1973, and graduated from Loyola College Prep in 1991. She received a BS in Nursing from Stephen F. Austin State University, and subsequently practiced as a nurse for six years, during which time her love for medicine grew. She then attended medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHSC) in San Antonio receiving her medical degree in 2005. Upon graduation, she completed a general surgery internship and an anesthesia residency at UTHSC. She then completed a critical care fellowship at The Cleveland Clinic. Casey truly excelled at everything she set her mind to do. She received awards for the excellent patient care she provided at every step of her training. Casey was inducted into the prestigious Gold Humanism Honor Society during medical school. In residency, she was nominated as the most outstanding resident in both critical care and obstetric anesthesia. At the world renowned Cleveland Clinic Foundation, she was honored to be their Fellow of the Year in her specialty. In 2011, she moved back to Texas, her home of 20 years, to start her life as a practicing physician in both academic medicine and private practice. The last five years have been full of rich experiences as she gave back to her community through teaching medical residents and students, saving lives, and being a doctor to so many in need. She loved to travel, and she always gave back to those in need in several ways, including her annual medical mission trip to Ecuador. Her trainees described her as "an amazing mentor, motherly, brilliant, genuine, down to earth, and passionate." The most perfect descriptions of her, however, come from two of her colleagues: "funny, vibrant woman with a big heart, strong faith, and a sharp wit" who "puts her entire heart and soul into caring for patients." It was well known that her true passion was being a mother. Her children were miracles for her, and they became her everything. She was incredibly organized, thoughtful, and present for them despite her prominent position in her career. She helped lead Girl Scout events, and she volunteered regularly at the kids' schools. Active in her church and a faithful Christian, she did everything with intentionality and grace. During the times when her love and advice are missed, all can be comforted that she chose to provide life through organ donation, a true act of love. Casey is survived by her two beautiful children, Molly and Hudson, and their father, Steve Drawert; her loving mother, Donna Lowderback Austin; and her father and step-mother, Gary and Val Mitchell. She was also dearly loved by her aunts, Patsy Weeks and Francis Mitchell, and her many cousins. She had a special cousin, Dr. Brittni Miller who followed in Casey's footsteps to become a physician. Casey's cherished step-siblings are Carey Holm, Jessica Austin Jack, Skip Austin, Sarah Greer, Libby Jester, and all of their spouses and children. Casey was proceeded in death by her brother, Colby Mitchell; her step-father, John Austin; and grandparents, Mandy and James Lowderback and Modene and Ralph Mitchell; as well as her uncles, Larry Weeks and Thomas Mitchell. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., Monday, March 14, 2016, at Porter Loring Mortuary North.

I never met Casey, but feel like I have because of Donna's posts and the love she showed so sweetly when she spoke of Casey, Molly, and Hudson. My heart is broken for you, Donna and Gary. My prayer is that you will receive peace and strength in the knowledge of what a beautiful, wonderful daughter you had in Casey. You raised her to love and care, and not many can love and care like she did. She has touched so many lives and made so many others better people. All of her excellence in so many areas, will go with you for the rest of your lives. As much as you are so very pained in her death on this earth, she did so much good that will never go away. What amazing parents you were! Donna, you poured so much love into her, and taught her how to love others well. That is evident in all of the work she did, and did so well! On top of all of that, she was an excellent mom to Molly and Hudson. I am sure that they have a lot of her inside of them.
I am praying every time I think of y'all, which is a lot. I am praying for her precious children, and you, as you comfort them, while trying to gain some understanding yourselves.
Like I said, I didn't know Casey, but feel like I did, especially after reading so many wonderful things about her. I get goose bumps reading about all the good she did. What an amazing legacy she leaves...
Donna, you are very loved and there are at least 1,000 of us you can call upon for anything!
Love and prayers go with you. God is holding you in His arms. Rest in those arms as much as you can.
Sending you love and praying diligently for y'all.

I was so very saddened to hear of Casey's tragic passing.
I havent seen or spoken to Casey in a long time, but she was a dear friend at one point in my life in high school so I will forever cherish the memories. I was just looking back at old photos we took and thinking about the times we shared. She was such a compassionate and kind soul when I knew her, and from what I've seen as the years have passed, she continued to be.
There is no doubt Casey was loved by many. My prayers and sympathy go out to her children and family.

March 14, 2016

Casey was such a wonderful person to be around! I was always happy to see her her name as faculty on ICU even though I always had the most horrendous calls when she was on. We would always joke the the Casey square combo was a bad Omen. And after each of those horrible calls, she'd bring me breakfast or coffee because she felt bad for me. She always encouraged the residents to act with compassion and think outside of the box and she led by example. I will never forget her. My prayers go out to her family through this difficult time.

Donna and family. My heart is filled with sadness and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your entire family. No one knows why bad things happen to those so innocent and whose life has hardly begun. For now it will have to remain the painful mystery that it is. Losses like this can make us challenge our faith; however, this is precisely the time when our faith needs to be its strongest. I am praying that your faith will help you through this very difficult time. I pray that you will find the strength to get you through your grief and sadness. In thinking about your loss, I would like to leave you with the oft quoted words of the poet Ellen Brenneman, We can't know why the lily has so brief a time to bloom in the warmth of sunlight's kiss upon its face before it folds into its fragrance and bids the world good night to rest its beauty in a gentler place. But we can know that nothing that is loved is ever lost and no one who has touched a heart can really pass away because some beauty lingers on in each memory of which they've been a part.

•"What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch. We may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget"
Please know that you are on my mind and in my heart in this time of tragedy.

In Sincere Friendship,

Leah Renwick
