Charles Schreiner III

Charles Schreiner III, of the Y.O. Ranch in Mountain Home, died Sunday in a San Antonio hospital. The well-known Hill Country rancher and historian known as Charlie III was 74. Schreiner died of complications from congestive heart failure. His 41- year-old son, Louis Schreiner II, died nine days earlier. Schreiner was born January 6, 1927, in San Antonio to Walter Richard Schreiner and Myrtle Barton Schreiner. He leaves behind his wife, Karol Schreiner. Schreiner attended San Antonio Academy in San Antonio, Schreiner Institute in Kerrville and Texas Military Institute, San Antonio. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from the University of Texas, Plan II, in 1947. He lived on the Y.O. Ranch and led the operation and management there from 1949 to 1976. Schreiner's grandfather, Capt. Charles Schreiner, was a Texas Ranger, and Charlie III was an historian devoted to studying and preserving memorabilia of the Rangers. He was president of the 12,000-member Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association in 1960. In 1964, he founded the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association, which now has 2,000 members in 48 states and Canada. In the mid-1960s, Schreiner founded the Exotic Wildlife Association, a group that now has 600 members devoted to raising exotic wildlife and hoofstock. He was president of the Hill Country Boys Livestock Association in Kerrville for three years. Schreiner served on the boards of directors of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association (1960-1983); Frost National Bank, San Antonio (1961-1984); Schreiner Bancshares, Kerrville (1952-1992); Southwest National Bank, Austin; Ingram State Bank, Ingram and First National Bank, Boerne. Gov. Dolph Briscoe appointed Schreiner a member of the board of directors of the Lower Colorado River Authority from 1974 to 1980. Schreiner was a member of the San Antonio Country Club, the German Club, Riverhill Country Club, Order of Alamo and the San Antonio Argyle Club. Schreiner is survived by his wife, Karol; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Schreiner IV and Mary Helen, Walter R. Schreiner and Teri, Gus L. Schreiner and Lori, and Chrisie Schreiner; stepdaughter, Deborah James and husband Marty; grandchildren, Griffin, Bobby Lee and Luke Schreiner, Catherine, Aimee and Walter R. Schreiner III, Tiffany, Tessa and Tyndall Schreiner and Molly and Austin Spratt; nieces, nephews, and friends around the world too numerous to count. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of the Methodist Hospital CICU in San Antonio, especially Pam Wright, RN, and Nat Sanderson, MD. All present and former ranch hands and friends are honorary pallbearers. Serving as pallbearers for the Service on Friday are Charles Schreiner IV, Walter R. Schreiner Jr., Gus L. Schreiner, Bob Berryman, Bud Davis, Joe Davis, Jimmy Dieringer, Tony Harden, Lynn Lueders and Rudy Krochmann. Family will receive friends on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Grimes Funeral Chapels of Kerrville. Services will take place Friday at 10:00 A.M. at the Y.O. Ranch. George C. Frasier, Chaplain of Texas Ranger Co. 'E.' Ret., will officiate. A reception will follow in the pavilion. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Former Texas Rangers Foundation, fulfilling Charlie III's dream of the FTRF Museum being located in Kerrville.
