Chris Madrid Obituary

MADRID
Chris Madrid went to be with his Savior on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at the age of 61. Chris was born in Los Angeles, California to Raul B. and Beatriz Portillo Madrid on October 12, 1950. He was preceded in death by his father, Raul B. Madrid, and long-time friend, Billy Berchelmann. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 33 years, Carolyn Barnette Madrid; his children Lisa Madrid Waller, and husband Bryce, and Michael Cameron Madrid; his mother, Beatriz Portillo Madrid; his brother, Carlos Madrid; his sister, Diana Madrid, and husband Duane Hilburn; and niece, Elena Berkowitz. He was also the hero of his two grandsons, Liam Christopher and Michael Ryan Waller. Chris was a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School, received a degree in marketing from The University of Texas at Austin, and returned to his hometown of San Antonio in 1977 to open what would become one of the city's favorite restaurants, Chris Madrid's. Chris Madrid loved life. He loved people. He was a man of integrity and a man of faith. He loved to laugh and to not let the sun go down on his anger. He loved the beaches of Port Aransas and traveling with his family. His community will remember him as a warm and generous man. His family will remember him as a caring son and brother, a loving husband and father and the greatest Papo his grandkids will ever know.

Ted Applewhite and I (Fred Meissner) were among the first customers in the Trinity community and loved the place. Many friends, Denis Abercrombie, Bill Hoover, my old girlfriend Raili all were there. I still have my Tacos and Burgers hat and T-shirt. I drink out of his Christmas coffee cup every December! He was a great man, solid business man, helped the community and represented the city internationally - all with flair and kindness. We miss him and best love to the family

I still cannot believe he is gone. So many beers with him watching over us in college...the business opportunities we explored once at The Buckhorn (what fabulous business acumen and integrity he displayed)...the many celebratory lunches with family and friends and business colleagues at the restaurant during my adult years because Chris Madrid's just felt like *home*...I will always remember his brilliant smile and his generous spirit. Dear Carolyn and family,
My heart is still broken and aching missing Chris with you. Words can't explain the feeling and emotions I'm having for you and Chris. I first met Chris at UT and we hit it off as friends from the start. Chris has always been a warm, caring, happy, fun friend that made me feel good about myself and everyone he was around. We has some great times living on Bullard lane as roommates. I only regret we did not do more things together with our families. The most important thing I have to mention is that I know for a fact that he is in Heaven because he told me he also accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and he was proud of it. We talked about our new faith many times and I shared with him that besides John 3:16 there is another verse that was incredible, 1 John 5:11-13. My parents lived on Hollywood street when my mom was pregnant with me. She would order her burger from a window and the only option was to eat that perfect burger on the pic-nic table outside that window. It's our family tradition to have my birthday celebration with family and friends at Chris Madrids every year. Often Chris could be mingling with his patrons and Chris's siser would be behind the counter getting our delicious slice of heaven out to us as quickly as it was put together. Mrs. Madrid, Carolyn, Delores, Diana, Carlos, Theresa and your beautiful family, my heart goes out to you all. Back in the first days of "the home of the taco bird," you were like family to me. I recall those many afternoons ordering 6 crispy tacos and a pitcher , then 6 more ... another 6 tacos please, maybe just 3 more this time. I think Mrs. Madrid was a little shocked at my appetite, but definitely proud of the joy her son's food brought to their customers. It was a sad day when Chris told me he was dropping tacos from the menu. He just didn't have enough customers with my appetite for tacos! Nachos and Tostada burgers have had to suffice. The last 35 years hold many fond memories of all of you. I am blessed for having you in my life. Surely, today the food just got better in heaven. God bless you Chris.

At times like this it is so extremely difficult to comprehend why such very special people like Chris and Billy have to be taken away from us much too early. Why do two individuals who truly made our everyday lives more enjoyable simply by being in their company have to leave us so soon? One thing we do know that is we are all better for knowing them. From Billy's boyish grin to the spontaneous laughter of Chris, these are things we loved about them and will forever keep close to our hearts. It was truly fitting that they were the best of friends. Over the past 30 years we celebrated many special events in our lives over a plate of Macho Nachos, coupled with the best burger on the planet and a basket of fries. As a young married couple, we celebrated birthdays with our parents and friends by toasting to the future. Later, we held our children's birthday parties at the tables reserved for us with the balloons attached by the thoughtful staff. More family birthdays were celebrated there than could be counted, but we are always reminded of them by the various CM t-shits we received over the years, along with all the " I ate the Macho" bumper stickers we acquired. I can think of no better restaurant that captures the true spirit of S.A. and it is always the first I recommend to newcomers to our city. I made sure that every out of town friend and relative who visited over the years accompanied us to this one of a kind jewel. Many a Christmas stocking has been stuffed with a CM gift certificate and always received with great appreciation. We will never forget Chris and the good times. Our sincere condolences go out to the Madrid family. This holiday season we will once again proudly wear our "Merry Chris Madrids" t-shirts and keep you in our thoughts and prayers.

To be admired and loved by so many people shows Chris is a very special person. Over 5o years ago my family moved to our home on Oblate. I didn't know anyone. Then I met Bill & Chris. A person couldn't have asked for better friends. Though I made other friends, none were as good as Chris & Bill. I think I spent more time going to events at Blessed Sacrament and Mount Sacred Heart, then I did my own schools. While growing up, I spent a lot of time at the Madrid and Berchelmann homes. I found out that not only were Chris and Bill really good people, but so were their families. I don't remember one time that I wasn't made to feel welcomed. Mrs. Madrid was such a nice and kind person to me. In the early seventies “Life's Journey” carried me away from San Antonio. It says in Ecclesiastes 3:1-4 “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven ….. A time to weep …. A time to mourn.” We cannot begin to understand what the family is going through. Ginger & I will be praying for the family … especially for Carolyn who has lost a husband, and for Chris' mother who has lost a husband and a son.

I have many great memories of spending Friday and Saturday afternoons at Madrid's as a student at Trinity. Chris always went out of his way to make us all feel at home. Over the years, as I come back to visit friends in SA, I always stop by Madrid's and Chris has always remembered my name and been as generous as he was in the early '80s. The first time I had my three sons with me, Chris outfitted them in official "Madrid's t-shirts".

I attended Robert E. Lee High School with Chris and his beautiful wife, Carolyn, and they are both wonderful people. Even back then Chris was always smiling, outgoing, more energetic and positive than most of his young classmates, and he always treated others with respect; he was never judgmental or condescending toward those of us who were less enthusiastic and motivated students. Furthermore I never heard a negative word spoken about him.

At our 20th class reunion while I chatted with Chris he would spot an old friend and comment on how good he or she looked and how well they were doing, and my feeling was "How about you, Chris-you're looking and doing better than all of us!"

I'm so saddened that he is gone, when I always thought a guy like that would be around a hundred years - I'll never forget him, and I feel really blessed to have known him!

I had the pleasure to know Chris since we were 6 years old, we attended Mount Sacred Heart school together, made our First holy communion together, went to Robert E. Lee High school. Chris was a wonderful friend, a True friend, always smiling and never said anything bad about anyone. I met Chris through my father Robert T. Brown. I've heard so many crazy and funny stories of these two growing up together. Everytime I went to Chris Madrids restaurant and happen to see him he always had a smile on his face also running around greeting everyone trying to do the job that a 100 people should be doing, but you never saw that smile leave his face. I could see very well that he enjoyed life. Chris will be deeply missed, but his name will always live on forever.

25 years ago or so a bunch of old wanna be jocks played city league flag football. Chris sponsored our team, and every year we named our team after one of Chris's menu items. One year we called ourselves "Porky's Delight" after Chris's world famous bacon cheeseburger. In the tough and tumble world of SA city league football, our jersey was powder blue with a picture of two pink pigs on the front (it still hangs on the wall at Chris Madrid's). Needless to say we didn't win many games, but what was important was the post game celebration back at Madrid's to enjoy his world famous cheeseburger and lots of cold beer. And Chris was always there to greet us and laugh about how bad we were. Great memories, great stories.
So I raise my glass to our friend Chris Madrid. Husband, father, grandfather, and loyal friend, and say... job well done.

My prayers go out to Chris' family- his Mom, Brother, Sister, Wife, kids & Grandkids. I've known Chris from 1960, our days from Mt. Sacred Heart through Robert E. Lee., in our young adult lives to present. Chris was always top-notch with a smile and always laughing. I know in my heart I'll see him again in the 3rd Heaven. It's impossible to recall "A" memory of a Man, and a Business, that is part of your very fiber. Like so many others...Chris, and Chris Madrid's, has been there thru my college days, my marriages, my divorces, and the births of my children. My prayers are with the entire family. I met Chris the year he started the best restaurant in San Antonio. I was a student at Trinity University, and my classmate, John Regnier, and I went to work on an advertisement for the student newspaper. As we stood in a cold wind outside the tiny converted gas station, Chris told exuberant dreams of what his restaurant could be. His enthusiasm was contagious. We worked up an ad for Chris that included a coupon for free Macho Nachos. Unfortunately none of us thought to tie it in with another purchase, or put an expiration date on. I am sure Chris took a financial hit from our errors, but he always just laughed about it. Over the years, we felt part of the family as Carlos, Diana, and Chris welcomed us back to the best restaurant in San Antonio. We even schemed with Chris about paying once for lifetime eating rights. I will miss my friend Chris. I will remember his smile being present even in a lunchtime crush. I will always remember the spark of recognition in his eyes seeing me after years of living in the Midwest. His humanity and passion for life touched all of us in a wonderful way. I hope heaven enjoys him just as much as we did.
