Daniel Abell Russell, Jr. MD

Daniel Abell Russell, Jr. MD passed away Thursday, May 26, 2011 in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on September 5, 1925. He attended Alamo Heights High School and graduated from Texas Military Academy in 1942. Dan went to University of Virginia for one year before joining the U.S. Navy, where he served as a hospital corpsman from 1943-1946. After leaving the armed service, Dan attended University of Texas and, later, Tulane University, where he completed Medical School in 1951. His residency was at Johns Hopkins in the Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute. With his residency complete, Dan returned to San Antonio, where he was in private practice for 45 years. He was a member of the Bexar County Medical Society, Texas Medical Society, and the American Eye Study Club and served as Chief of Ophthalmology at Robert B. Green Hospital and as a consultant to the Brook Army Hospital. Dan was a member of the San Antonio Country Club, Texas Cavaliers, and the San Antonio German Club. He was a dedicated member of St. David's Episcopal Church for over 50 years. Dan is preceded in death by his parents, Daniel A. Russell MD and Naomi Gouger Russell; his wife, of 55 years, Ann Knotts Russell; his sisters, Eleanor R. Folbre, and her husband, Jay and Nancy R. Kangerga and her husband, Michael. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Russell; daughters, Mary Cecile Nelson and her husband, Robert, Naomi Deborah Burns and her husband, John, Rebecca Ann Wagner and her husband, John, and his son, Daniel A. Russell III and his wife, Anne Marie as well as 11 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren and two stepsons, David and Guy Antonioli. He is proud of his twenty-six years of recovery.
