Eugene "Gene" Maurice Cain, 95 of San Antonio Texas died Saturday February 19, 2011Alamo Heights Rehabilitation Health Center in San Antonio. A Bartholomew County Indiana native, Mr. Cain was born April 22, 1915 in Columbus, Indiana. He was the eldest son of the late Bedie and Leone Cain of Columbus, Indiana. He graduated from Columbus High School in 1933 and was employed as Director of Personnel by Cummins Diesel Engine Company from 1936 to 1941.He was a member of the National Guard as Second Lieutenant serving in the 3rd Battalion , 150th Field Artillery as Battery and Combat Training Officer. A WWIX veteran of the greatest generation he served in the United States Army. Major Cain served overseas in Asiatic Pacific Theatre of Operations as member of 426 Armored Field Artillery. He was stationed in the Philippine Islands. Major Cain was the highest ranking American Officer in the Philippines and at the conclusion of WWII the commander of the Japanese troops surrendered directly to Major Cain. Major Cain was appointed Governor of the Philippine Islands by President Dwight D. Eisenhower until the Philippine government reorganized. Decorations and Citations included: Occupation of Japan, Philippine Liberation medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Theatre Medal and WWII Victory Medal. He was honorably 'discharged from the United States Army after serving from 1941 to 1947.
He married his High School sweetheart Charllotte King of Columbus, Indiana on July 7, 1934. She preceded him in death July 14, 1975.
On June 8, 1978 he married Eleanor Strang Turney of Madison, Maine at St. Mathews Catholic Church in San Antonio. They were married 32 years. Mr. Cain was Director of Marketing of an Insurance Agency. He was an entrepreneur, an avid reader end a gourmet cook. Mr. Cain is survived by his loving wife Eleanor2 sons, Gene Cain Jr. and Jerry Cain all of San Antonio Texas. He is survived by a sister Martha Cain Bush of Indianapolis Indiana, Florida and James Lee Cain (Karen) of Ashville, Oregon. Others survivors include, nieces Lori Ellen Phillips of Columbus, Indiana and Carol Sue Bush Marsh of Indianapolis, Indiana. A nephew, Dr. Douglas C. Phillips. Other nieces and nephews include Cindy Cain Meyers, Julia Cain, David and Jim Cain all of Southern, CA, Great nieces include Jessica Phillips of Manhattan, NY. and Megan Phillips of Cambridge MA. Mr. Cain was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother Closson, an infant sister Marcella, sister Lorene Phillips(Cecil) all of Columbus, Indiana. And a nephew Steve Bush of Tampa, Florida. Mr. Cain will be cremated according to his wishes and buried at private ceremony at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas.
