George Richards Obituary
George L. (Jack) Richards was born in El Paso, TX on July 18, 1926 to George E. and Mamie O. Richards. Jack passed away at his ranch near Wimberley, TX on March 7, 2003, surrounded by his family. Jack graduated from Austin High School in El Paso in 1943 before joining the U.S. Navy pre-flight training program from 1944-1946. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in 1948 from Texas College of Mines and Metallurgy (UTEP) with a major in Geology and served as president of Phi Kappa Tau fraternity. He married Marjorie Ann Carlin, to whom he was married 43 years, and pursued his professional career as a geologist beginning with Standard Oil Company of Texas. In 1964, he joined Coastal States Gas Producing Company where he advanced to Senior Vice President. He was with Bright and Company in San Antonio from 1978-1996. Jack is survived by his wife, Lois Toole Richards; daughter, Julie Richards McNeil and husband Michael of Corpus Christi; son, Jack Richards and wife Vicki of Oklahoma City; brother, James V. Richards and wife Pam of Houston; sister, Mayre Sue Overstreet and husband Charles of El Paso; grandchildren, Patrick McNeil, Kathleen McNeil, Christopher Richards, Clarke Richards; his wife's children, Michael Edmond, Timothy Edmond and Jane Edmond Weber and their spouses; six grandchildren and great-grandchild. Jack was active in both his professional and local community. He proudly spoke of his family and their Texas lineage where his grandfather, Alonzo Oden, was a Texas Ranger. He was a member of both The Sons of the Republic of Texas and The Texas Society Sons of the American Revolution. He was an Emeritus Member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and member of both the Houston and South Texas Geological Societies. He previously served on various boards, including, most recently, the Petroleum Club of San Antonio and St. StephenÔs Episcopal School. Jack was an active member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Wimberley, TX where his Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, March 9, 2003 at 3:00 P.M. There will be a Private Burial Service for family members. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Stephen's Episcopal School, located at 6000 FM 3237, Wimberley, TX 78676.
