Gerhard Meyer Obituary

January 22, 1923 - October 28, 2014
Loving husband and father, Dr. Gerhard A. Meyer, passed away on October 28, 2014 after a long illness.

His life began in Tacubaya, Mexico (Mexico City, D.F.). His parents, Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Meyer had emigrated from Germany to Mexico and then to America.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Felicitas Meyer, and their two daughters, Felice Zars (spouse Leif Zars) and Christa Hinckley (spouse Scott Hinckley); four grandchildren: Leif Zars, II (spouse Brittany Zars), Tassie Zars (Fiancé Matthew Pena), Spencer Hinckley, and Chris Hinckley; and one great-grandchild, Leif Zars, III.

He had a long and distinguished career in medicine. He graduated from Long Island College of Medicine in New York in 1947 and continued on to New York City Hospital for his Post-Graduate work followed by a fellowship at Frank E Bunts Educational Institute - Cleveland Clinic in 1954.

The United States Army put him through medical school and he re-enlisted in the USAF Medical Corps during the Korean War and was Honorably Discharged in 1952 as a Captain USAF.

Gary moved to San Antonio with his wife and began his private practice in 1954. He held many positions throughout his long career in San Antonio including Past-President of Nix Hospital Staff, Chief of Medicine and Chief of Staff at St. Luke's Lutheran Hospital.

He was co-founder and partner of the Southwest Medical Clinic from 1969-1996. He was also a Diplomat of the American College of Physicians, Fellow of the American College of Physicians, President of the Texas Academy Chapter of the American College of Physicians, Past President of the San Antonio Club of Internal Medicine - Texas Society of Internal Medicine, and appointment to the National Advisory Council of Regional Medical Programs - Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW).

Upon retiring, he was the Medical Consultant for Encompass Home Health Care and a docent at the San Antonio Zoo. The five years he was a docent at the zoo brought him great joy - it was a culmination of his love for all life.

The family would like to thank the Griswold Home Care, especially Beatriz Martinez and Lisa Moreno for the wonderful care they gave Dr. Meyer.

A Memorial Service will be held in the Porter Loring Chapel, 1101 McCullough on Thursday, November 6, 2014 at 12:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the San Antonio Zoological Garden and Aquarium, 3903 N. St. Mary's Street, San Antonio, TX 78212 or The Nature Conservancy, 4245 N. My name is Mary Davlin O'Cana, I grow up know Dr. Meyer he took care of my father James O. Davlin as the years of my life with my parents Dr Meyer was part of our lifes. I would see him so often that I would go behind the desk at the hospital and we would talk about my dad and how we could take good care of him. Dr. Meyer always would put his arm around me and tell me that my dad was going to be ok. He treated me like family and I know loved is life family in a way a good doctor could. I know as I write this My mom and Dad are sitting with him welcoming him come with friends and love ones. The last time I saw Dr. Meyer was at the HEB with is beautiful wife. Who I thank for sharing your husband with all the people he cared for and love. I wish you the best in health and for you to know that behind all great men are there Wife's. God Bless You! And Dr. Meyer till I see you again passed the gates say Hello to my parents and I will keep your wife in my prayers. Mary Davlin O'Cana [email protected]
