Gloria A. Prater
January 16, 1931 - August 5, 2025
On August 5, Gloria A. (Villarreal) Prater, 94, of Fox Point, WI passed away as a result of Alzheimer's Disease and a recent stroke. Born on January 16, 1931 in San Antonio Texas, Gloria was the middle child born to her parents Sofia and Antonio Villarreal.
Gloria grew up loving her family and friends, as well as the traditions of her Mexican-American home. In 1958 she met the love of her life, Jacob J. "Jack" Prater at a dance at Fort Sam Houston. Shortly after marrying in San Antonio, they traveled to Cincinnati to meet Jack's family followed by a move to Frankfort, Germany where Jack was to be stationed.
In 1960 Gloria returned to Cincinnati for the birth of the couple's only child, Debra (Debbie). The family lived in Cincinnati for 10 years before moving to several cities (Denver, Louisville, Milwaukee and Chicago) as Jack's career took off. With each move Gloria quickly found work with several federal government agencies. In retirement she took great joy in her new role as grandmother ("Mamaw") to three grandsons. Upon Jack's retirement, the couple settled in Wisconsin spending many happy years making friends and having adventures with their daughter and her family.
Gloria is survived by daughter Debbie (Prater) Mitchelson, son-in-law Mark Mitchelson, and grandsons Luke, Noah (June Kaewpiatao), and Max (Meg Selkey). She is also survived by sisters-in-law Jane (Greg) Smith, Frances (Ron) Conner, and Bonnie (Tony) Villarreal. She was an aunt to 25 nieces and nephews and cousin to many. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband - Jack, her parents, and her brothers, Raul and Tony Villarreal.
Gloria was known by friends and family as a sweet and gentle soul who loved her family, dancing, vacationing, and celebrations of all types. Gloria's family wishes to express their thanks to the caregivers at Azura Assisted Living & Memory Care – Fox Point, Dr. Angela Beckert, and Horizon Home Care & Hospice for providing her with loving care.
A celebration of Gloria's life will be held on Saturday, September 27 from 3:00- 4:30 pm at Azura Assisted Living & Memory Care (7770 N Port Washington Rd, Fox Point WI 53217) with a brief program at 3:30 pm . All are invited to attend to celebrate her life. To honor Gloria, memorial gifts can be made in support of the Azura Team in the
