Grace Frankstone Obituary

FRANKSTONE
Grace Venable Frankstone died in Chapel Hill on January 18, 2009, after a short illness. She was born in San Antonio, Texas on December 4, 1921, the only child of John Manning Venable and Florence Birdsall Venable and a granddaughter of Francis Preston Venable, President of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1900 through 1914. She attended St. Mary's Hall in San Antonio, Randolph Macon Women's College in Lynchburg, Virginia and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she received her bachelor's degree in 1941. After her return to San Antonio, she married Edward R. Frankstone and, in 1964, they and their three sons moved to Birmingham, Alabama. They relocated again in 1972 to Columbia, South Carolina. Following her husband's death in 2001, Grace Frankstone returned to her beloved Chapel Hill and was a resident at Carol Woods Retirement Community. She was a lifelong Presbyterian, having been a member of First Presbyterian Church in Columbia and, most recently, of University Presbyterian Church in Chapel Hill. She is survived by her three devoted sons and their wives: David and Laura Frankstone of Chapel Hill, Manning and Katherine Frankstone of Columbia, and Kent and Jackie Frankstone of Tarrytown, New York. She had ten grandchildren: Susan, Kate, Lee, Cecelia, Harper, Preston, Manning, Timothy, Lena and her namesake, Grace, and two great-grandchildren, Anderson and Jonas. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the University of North Carolina College of Arts and Sciences Foundation at 134 E. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC 27514. Online donations may be made at https://college.unc.edu/foundation/makeagift.

How saddened we were to learn of Grace's passing. She was our neighbor on Roslyn Drive in Columbia, SC. I remember fondly her interest in our three children as they scampered about the neighborhood. Sympathy is extended to all her family; we remember how proud she was of her three sons and their families.
