Haidee Winter Obituary

December 22, 1935 - August 11, 2019
Haidee Elizabeth Gerhardt Winter was born on December 22, 1935, in San Antonio and lived almost all of her 83 years in this city. She died August 11, 2019, after a lengthy illness. Haidee's parents were Haidee Mae Williams Gerhardt and Judge Raymond Gerhardt.
In 1960, Haidee married Charles Davidson Winter, Jr., at Christ Episcopal Church in San Antonio. They moved to McAllen where they started their family in 1961. From 1963 to 1966, Charlie and Haidee lived on the Gerhardt family farm outside of San Antonio. In 1966, Charlie and Haidee moved back to San Antonio. For 37 years they lived on Belvidere Drive in Olmos Park, where they raised their two children. Charlie Winter died in January 2011 after a long battle with cancer.
Haidee was a wonderful caregiver for Charlie, in addition to being a creative and inspiring elementary school teacher. Haidee Winter loved international travel, animals (especially Sophie Lynn Winter and Rose Marie Winter), and the Port Aransas and Mendocino coasts. She enjoyed many lifelong friendships with schoolmates, college friends, neighbors, colleagues, and members of her church communities. During her last illness she enjoyed many visits from wonderful family and friends.
Haidee is survived by her daughter Kathleen Winter and son-in-law, Greg Campbell, of Sonoma, CA; and her son, Raymond Charles Winter, and his partner, Frances Townsend, of Austin; granddaughters Katherine Pala, of Austin, and Elizabeth Pala, of Orlando, FL; and by Margaret Mickler Judson, Letitia Mickler Rutan, Robert W. Mickler, and their families; Cathy Cummins, Michele Cummins, and Thomas Cummins; her nephews, Robert Winter, and Paul Winter; and many other dear friends.

Remembering Haidee Winter

In late September 1957, after two weeks at a San Antonio elementary school, we finally moved into military housing at Ft. Sam Houston. When I went to my 2nd grade class at Ft. Sam Elementary School I was blessed to get the best teacher I ever had in my whole life. She was Haidee Gerhardt, who many of you know as Haidee Winter, and she was smiling and kind and welcoming as I joined the class.

Ms. Gerhardt filled me with the joy of learning, fed my curiosity, encouraged me to read, taught me manners (from the book Nixie Bunny in Manners-Land), affirmed my worth, and gave me a hunger to learn about the rest of the world. No wonder I became a teacher myself later in life!

Over the years Haidee & I visited and spoke and wrote each other many times. And from time to time my own parents, who loved and adored Haidee, would join us for lunch at Earl Abel's or some other revered San Antonio restaurant. My Dad, a chaplain at Ft. Sam, often did an assembly talk at the school. Haidee always sought him out at those visits. Pleasantries were exchanged and she would always say how much she enjoyed having me in her 2nd grade class, even as I moved up all the way to 6th grade at Ft. Sam Elementary.

I last spoke with Haidee several weeks ago, when she was already in hospice care. Even then she spoke kindly of me and bragged about my accomplishments in life and as a teacher. She always made me feel better.

Mrs. Haidee Winter made a big difference in my life. I hope she did in yours as well. I am grateful that I knew her from such a young age and that I was able to rely on her love, affirmation, kindness, smiles, and tender words all my life. She left a great legacy in teaching for over 30 years. Better yet, she left a greater legacy with her children, Raymond and Kat, and her many friends.

I am grateful for having Haidee Winter in my life. She is now with Charlie. I will never forget her. And someday I will see her again, too!

She was my aunt and a very loving and warm person. And will be missed. And why I am not surprised by past students expressing her real impact in their lives. I had a teacher or two like Aunt Haidee and I will always remember them the same. To my cousins Raymond and Kathleen my love and best ...

Kathleen and Raymond, I loved your mother dearly. We were friends at Jefferson High School and then got back in touch in later years. I am happy for her that she is now with Charlie. I never knew two people who were more in love.

We are deeply saddened to learn of Haidee's death. She was a gifted and inspired teacher who enriched the lives and early learning experiences of many young boys at San Antonio Academy where she taught second grade. Haidee was unfailingly kind, caring and encouraging to everyone she ever met. She will be dearly missed ~but never forgotten.
