This has been a very emotional week to say the least. I think I am doing fine and then all of a sudden it hits me. I miss you so much. I know that this is "life" and it happens to all of us, but why does it have to hurt so much. I love you Dad and I can hear you saying, "Honey, you have to just keep on trucking, it will all work it's self out". I know you are still with us, I can feel you at times. Please speak with your new found buddy and ask him to help us out a little during this holiday season, we are going to need it! Hugs and kisses, your middle one.

October 16, 2011

This was a busy weekend! Mom and Nicole came to visit and Austin had his homecoming! He looked very handsome & All grown up. Jordyn says she talked to you on the walkie talkie and Mom heard her say, "If you do it like this, you won't get hurt".... Mom was amazed at how much the lights went off in the entertainment center, only on the side with your urn. I told her you were giving us a sign and that you wanted us to know you were still around, watching over us.
Jack and Bobby took you to the deer lease this weekend, Jack said he was going to buckle you into the back seat!
I hope the guys had a good weekend!
I love you Dad!

I think I witnessed my Fathers Passing.... As I was sitting in the back seat of the car, driving with the hazards flashing, trying to make it there before he flew up to heaven on that chopper he had already started.... I saw him board helicopter, I stood there waving while he hovered and tilted the helicopter so that I could see him waving back, then flew off, As clouds seemed to handle him with care almost boosting him up further in a very gentle way. He landed and a solider stood at the entrance and saluted him, As he guided him in saying "Welcome Sir".... There stood his Mother with her arms open wide, being first in line because she would have it no other way. They ran to each other and he picked her up and twirled her around as she whispered in his ear, "I missed you Jimmy". .. then she took his hand and walked her to where stood his other mother, she cupped his face and gave him a kiss on the cheek looked him in his eyes and said, "Welcome Home, my Jimney Cricket!"...... he then noticed behind stood a tall soldier, saluting him, he looked up and said, Do I know you?....The Solider shook his hand and said, Nice to meet you son, its an honor!" Then he gets a tap on his shoulder and turns around, Surprised to see Uncle Dick standing there; he says, Hey Dick your walking... next tapping his head, begins to smile even harder and says...oh yeah, that’s right!!!", He puts his arm around Dick and says " walk with me, What's been going on?". They walk a little further... and Dad sees an Angel sitting in what looks to be a very comfortable chair. So what is he doing and why is he sitting there? Dick says, "Well Jim he is the highest ranked guardian angel and that is the best seat in the house!" Dad turns and says, well you will see me when you see me!.. Dick responds and says, Jim wait, there are many more to welcome you, your brothers in arms, your fellow pilots, more relatives and some of your best friends...... Dad replies, while waving his hand in the downward motion, oh it will be fine, it's not like I'm going anywhere. big smile and chuckles....He makes his way to the Angel and says, with all do respect ...I probably have just as much air time saving lives as you, maybe more....he motions the thumbs up towards his shoulder and says "Get outta my chair".... I have one big family and a lot of work to do over these next few days, I was the only male in the house of 4 females, my work is not done!"

It got harder and harder
since the day you went away
but still people keep telling me
everything shall be okay

I know deep inside
that it’s better up there
but we're not together
which makes it unfair

Seems like yesterday
that we were together
then I opened my eyes
to realize gone means forever

It hurts and it aches
its slicing my heart
for the rest of my life
we shall be apart

I’m waiting for the future
hoping to see
that when I die
You'll open up those gates for me

Having a Grandpa
with a heart made of gold
is my favorite treasure
which will never grow old

Family reunions
will never be the same
cause you’re not there with us
to be stronger I aim

Your chair at the table
is empty and cold
you need to come home
I need someone to hold

Now that your gone
I have no-one to run to
Am I doing this right
please send me a clue

I don’t understand
the meaning of life
I can’t get this right
Keep getting in strife

Do you Know
How much we all love you
Do you realize
How much I trust You

Your Officially gone
But forever in my heart
You and me Grandpa
together, yet apart

James Riovo was ineligible to be drafted during the Vietnam War, but that didn't stop him from enlisting. In 1969, he signed on to train as an Army medevac pilot.

“His father was a full colonel, so Jim grew up with a heavy military influence,” said his wife, Barbara. “Jim enlisted to make his dad proud, and because he believed in protecting this country.”

During his two-year stint, Riovo was shot down twice while rescuing injured soldiers. And though he rarely spoke of his time there, his children learned of their father's heroism from Riovo's dad.

“Our grandfather was stationed with him in Vietnam and told us how our dad kept his crew alive after being shot down by holding off an ambush until a rescue chopper could get to them,” his daughter Averi Garza said.

Riovo died Sept. 8 from complications of lung cancer. He was 63.

After the war, Riovo continued saving lives during a 20-year stint as a life flight pilot for Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

“He loved the idea of being a pilot. Since he was a boy; flying was his first love,” his wife said. “But helping people, that's what he was all about.”

In 2005, Riovo and his wife moved to San Antonio, and he became active with VFW Post 8541.

“He was very dedicated to the VFW,” his daughter said. “He did whatever he could to help vets get by.”

This included lending money when disabled vets' Social Security checks hadn't arrived, donating a big-screen TV for vets to watch sporting events, and offering advice to those battling post-traumatic stress disorder.

“He helped a lot of the wounded warriors get help for PTSD; they would confide in him about feeling suicidal, and he would put them in his truck and drive them to the VA and make sure they were taken care of,” Garza said.

Something that aided Riovo in that effort was maintaining ties with his former Vietnam pilots. Every few years, Riovo would meet up with pals who understood the effects of war.

“They were comrades and brothers who saw the worst things you could ever see, they experienced them together,” his wife said.

A form of relaxation for Riovo came from attending Nevada's annual Burning Man event, where art and self-expression offered him a sense of freedom.

“I'll miss him every day of my life, and I'll be waiting patiently for the day when we reunite,” his wife said.

Yesterday, was Dad's funeral. So much emotion was involved! So many faces, so many people who were touched by my father, it was a great tribute and and honor to him. Knowing his humble self, he would not expect so many people to be there. I thank each and every one of you who attended and those who could not make it! Thank you for helping my Father rest in peace! I love you Dad!

Y'all have had a rough year and they say that everything happens for a reason..... Yes, that stinks for now but, I hope and wish for all of you positive, brighter, happier days, months, and years. You girls stay close and take care of your mom. Please don't forget to take a breather and remember as many funny memories about him that you can and laugh until you pee in your pants. Its ok to laugh and remember the good and funny times. I know you will miss him terribly and no words that I can say will make it easier. Just know that so many of us back here are here for any one of you. Rest, take a breather, and try to get a few of those good ole belly laughs in some how. We love you all!

Jim Riovo (My Mother's true love,a man who is wise, patient, joyful & strong, Grandpa. An angel with wings, better known as a pilot. A man who shares a bond with only the few brave men who served with him "Brother-in-Arms", A Commander who would donate funds to the VFW, because as he would say, "It was the right thing to do!" A Friend to many, But most of all, Our Father! I smile knowing that I can say, that was "My Dad"!

My heart aches when I stop to think about how long it will be when I see you next! I already miss you so much! You are an amazing Father, a mystery to some, but a HERO to all. I can honestly say that I can feel you with me. I hear your chuckle when we crack a joke or talk about all of your many hats! I enjoy hearing all of the funny stories that people tell me about you! I only wish I knew this information sooner so I could give you crap, :) . I will never go a day with out you in my heart.
If ever in doubt, I will ask myself WWJD, "What would Jim Do?"

I witnessed your journey to the "Golden Gates" and I continue to find peace knowing that you are NO longer in pain. It eases my selfish pain to know that you are with our loved ones that "beat you to it"!, Please give Grandma and Omi hugs and kisses from all of us! It makes me smile to know that you now will get to watch the Grandchildren grow up without having to drive 300 miles!! I love you Daddy! Watch over us.

Your Daughter!
