Janice James Obituary

October 16, 1938 - October 2, 2018
Janice Nora Mary Samm James passed from this world into the arms of her loving Lord Jesus on October 2, 2018. She was a much beloved sister, mother, aunt, grandmother, coworker, and friend.
Janice was born October 16, 1938 in Luton, England to Brian William Samm and Marjorie Evelyn Florence Samm (formerly Peck).
Janice attended the local school in Caddington, but her greatest delight was the family farm she grew up on. She enjoyed working with animals and helped her father with all aspects of the farm. If she was not at school or on the farm, she was probably at the dirt track watching the horse races or her father's greyhounds. Her father and uncles taught her to ride before she could walk, and she became an exceptional horsewoman...something she enjoyed all of her life.
She was married April 11, 1959 to U.S. Airman John George James. She loved to travel and immigrated with her husband to the United States in 1960 when their daughter, Jeryl Lynn, was 12 weeks old. They divorced in 1967, and she never remarried.
Janice worked as a switchboard operator and secretary in Biloxi, Mississippi before moving to San Antonio in 1972 where she worked for Main Bank downtown. During this time she took great pleasure in reconnecting with her childhood joy...horses. She placed in a wide range of American Quarter Horse Association events, and enjoyed AQHA competition from 1967-1977.
In 1977 she began working for Broadway Bank where she continued until her retirement in 2007. Even in retirement, Janice used her financial skills to serve as the Church treasurer for St. Chads Anglican Congregation.
Although she loved her homeland of England, she was very proud to become a naturalized citizen of the United States on August 24, 2000.
She is survived by her brother John Brian Samm of Melksham, England; her daughter, Jeryl Lynn Gates and husband Timothy Gates; and her grandson, Quinton Kyle Weidner of San Antonio, Texas.

Condolences to your family, I am Janice's second cousin and live in Davenport Iowa. I have many memories of the farm at Caddington when I was a boy. Janice's grandparents were my aunt and uncle, Edith and Albert Peck who lived in Manor Road. My father Harold Barrett was the brother of Edith. John Barrett.
