Joe Avelar Obituary

Joe G. Avelar, born August 26, 1911, died peacefully at home with his daughters on Sunday, April 29, 2001 in Laredo, TX. Joe was a lifelong resident of San Antonio, TX. He spent the last one and one-half years of his life in Laredo, TX, where he lived with his daughter and son-in-law, after the passing of his wife of 58 years, Emilia V. 'Millie' Avelar. Joe was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Union-Local No. 60 for 63 years. He had just received his '60-Years Service Pin' in 1998. Joe was a 'master' glass blower whose creative handcraft can still be seen in San Antonio, TX. Joe G. Avelar is survived by his daughters, Louria J. (George) McLaughlin of Roswell, GA, Jo-Ann (Henri) Kahn of Laredo, TX, and Marion K. (Charles) Garza of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Brian McLaughlin, Roswell, GA and Michelle (Cary) Cheshire, San Diego, CA, Claudia Kahn and Greg Kahn (Cati), Laredo, TX and David Garza (Martha) and Angela Garza, San Antonio, TX; great-grandchildren, Victoria A. Kahn, Trey Kahn, Katelyn Elizabeth Kahn, Chelsey Garza, Karolina Garza, Lauren Garza and Charles David Garza, Jr. Joe was a personable man who loved to sing at gatherings. He and his wife, Millie, made quite a couple on the dance floor. He had many friends and acquaintances. His pleasant demeanor and kindness will be missed by his family. A Rosary will be recited on Wednesday, May 2, 2001 at 7:00 P.M. at Sunset Funeral Chapel (6321 Bandera Rd.). A Funeral Mass, officiated by Monsignor Emil J. Wesselsky, will be celebrated on Thursday, May 3, 2001 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Henry's Catholic Church (1619 S. Flores St.). Interment will be in the family plot at San Fernando Cemetery II
