John Campbell Obituary

May 30, 1922 - July 31, 2014
Chief Master Sergeant John D. Campbell, 92, died of natural causes in San Antonio, Texas on July 31, 2014. A veteran of World War II, Korea and Viet Nam, he had a long and distinguished career in the U.S. Air Force. "Chief" Campbell was born May 30, 1922, in Van Buren, Ohio. At age five, his family moved to Ponca City, Oklahoma, where he would finish high school and meet the love of his life, Edna (Jerry) Campbell. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in October, 1941, and served in the south pacific during World War II, and was promoted to Master Sergeant after just seventeen months in the service. John and Jerry were married on April 8, 1945, and John was discharged in September, 1945. After briefly working for CONOCO, he decided that a career in the military was a better fit for him, and he reenlisted in the Air Force. John retired from the Air Force in 1969, after 28 years of service, and immediately began a second career at Swearingen Aircraft (later purchased by Fairchild), where he worked until 1982.
John was a brave and loyal Airman, as well as a loving husband and father. He married Jerry Young in Ponca City, Oklahoma in 1945. John was an avid and accomplished golfer, and carried a "scratch" handicap for many years. He is survived by his sons DeWayne and Steven, his three grandchildren, and his five great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Edna. Graveside services will be held Friday, November 21, 2014 at 11:15 A.M. at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
