John Carroll Obituary

April 1, 1929 - June 8, 2018
John Eugene ("Jack") Carroll was truly A Man for All Seasons.
He died in his longtime family home in San Antonio on June 8, 2018. He was 89 years old. He was born on April 1, 1929, in Columbus, Ohio to his parents, Tom and Marie Carroll. A devout Catholic, Jack attended St. Charles Seminary after his graduation from high school, but ultimately left the path to priesthood in 1951 to marry the love of his life, Joan Carmel ("Jo") Eshelman - they were married for 66 years.
Jack started his career in television in the medium's infancy as a mailroom clerk at WLW-C station in Columbus. During the Korean conflict, he joined the Air Force where he was assigned to a specialized unit in Los Angeles tasked with developing the Air Force's television videotaping and broadcasting capabilities. After leaving active duty, Jack and Jo returned to Columbus where Jack was welcomed back at WLW-C - this time as a producer-director. He won a Regional Emmy Award for excellence in local television for Christmas in the Air, a seasonal program that he wrote and produced and which (much to their chagrin) featured several of his children. In 1967, the Carroll clan moved to San Antonio, Texas after Jack was promoted to serve as the Program Director for KMOL-TV. He would stay in that position until his retirement in 1994.
Jack loved his work at KMOL, especially when it involved his creative side. His service to the San Antonio community is best remembered by his production for many years of the Children's Miracle Network annual telethon benefitting Santa Rosa's Children's Hospital, his later volunteer work with Catholic Television, and his service on the Board of Directors for Incarnate Word College.
Jack Carroll was a man who knew who he was. He was just as comfortable in his role as a TV executive as he was working in his well-equipped, completely organized garage workshop. He enjoyed a wide variety of interests and was multi-talented. There wasn't a New York Times crossword puzzle that he couldn't quickly solve or a car that he couldn't repair. Everyone fondly remembers Jack and the 1962 Ford Cortina he essentially rebuilt by hand and often drove to and from work. After retiring, Jack delved into woodworking and became a master craftsman, building fine furniture for his family. He was smart, compassionate, always patient with his children, grandchildren and, more recently, with his great grandchildren. He taught them love and respect by the way he treated others and cherished their mom throughout their many years of marriage.
Jack is survived by his beloved wife, Jo, his daughters Joan Carroll, and her husband Morgan King, Judy Melgaard, and her husband, Andy, Kathleen Paul and her husband, Norman, Julie Kleck, and her husband, Kevin, and his son, John Carroll and his wife, Brenda Levenstein. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, whom he loved with all his heart. He is preceded in death by his son, Thomas Carroll; and parents, Tom and Marie Carroll.

My one and only brother left home and married when I was only 10! I got his bedroom but i was so mad at him! I got over it and when he came back to Columbus I babysat for his babies for several years and then he left again one month before I got married - but then after that there were many great trips back and forth, exciting fun times for us all.... and such beautiful Texas weddings he gave his kids, the loves of his life. So many memories....Never to be repeated! Loved him so, will miss him so! Rest Well Big Brother....until....
