John Fulcher Obituary

Dr. John Gregory Fulcher, Ph.D.
Dr. John Gregory Fulcher, Ph.D., entered life on March 22, 1949, at the Nix Hospital in San Antonio, TX, and transitioned from life in his Dallas home in January 2024 at age 74. In his pre-school years John first displayed his genius, skipped a grade, building a functional crystal radio before he was thirteen, and was awarded a full 4-year scholarship to Central Catholic High School in San Antonio where he was valedictorian of the class of 1966, and he earned a fully funded 4-year National Merit Scholarship to Rice University. There he received a degree in organic chemistry, then continued study & research towards a Ph.D. at the University of California at San Diego followed by post-grad work at the University of California at Los Angeles, where he taught college chemistry. As a Principal Scientist for the Frito Lay corporation, where he was employed for the longest tenure, John was credited as the inventor in three U.S. patents and shared the role of inventor with teammates in four other patents. Throughout life, John had a love for sports, competing in youth baseball, high school bowling, college intramural and adult softball leagues. He also enjoyed both canned and live music, Dylanology, weightlifting, distance running, and swimming for fitness, intellectual pursuits, reading and collecting books, video-recording/editing, and was also a superfan of Laura Lynch Tull of the original Dixie Chicks. John, well-loved by the neighbors who knew him, was a quiet, modest, and simple and non-materialistic man who could rise to the occasion of public speaking and international travel.
He was a life-long inspiration to his siblings and their families. Even though he lived and worked in Dallas this absolutely kind, gentle, generous and loving man, would never miss traveling to San Antonio to celebrate with family birthdays and holidays. John remained a devout Catholic as an adult, attending Mass at St. Monica Catholic Church in Dallas, TX. and was preceded in death by siblings Mike, Cecilia, and Letitia, parents John Monroe & Opal Irene, and is survived by two brothers, Timothy and William, nieces and nephews Elisabeth, Elysia, John, and Austin, grand nieces Gabriella and Khloe, numerous cousins, as well as his Aunt Ruth Fulcher Jupe.

Memorial Services: 2pm Thursday, March 14, 2024, at St Monica's Catholic Church, 9933 Midway Rd, Dallas, Texas.

Rest in peace John. I learned a lot from you about packaging analysis when you were working at Frito-Lay. I enjoyed our monthly lunch meetings for the next 20 years after your retirement. You will be missed.
