John Charles Mitchell
April 23, 1932 - October 24, 2025
John Charles Mitchell, 93 born in Jourdanton, Texas on 23 April 1932, passed from this earth on Friday, October 24, 2025, and was looking forward to joining the love of his life in eternity. He graduated from Hot Wells High School in 1949, served four years in the US Navy (51-54) during the Korean war. He graduated from St. Mary's University with a degree in Physics in 1958 and studied Nuclear Engineering at SMU in Dallas (61-64). He had a long and respected career in science and technology, beginning with the Chance Vought Aircraft company/Ling Temco Vought in 1958 and with the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine beginning in 1964. In 1990 while serving as the Research Director of Radiation Sciences, he was selected into the USAF Senior Executive Service. He retired in 1994 with 34 years of Federal service. He loved his job and received many awards over the years for professional achievements.
He and his wife spent many pleasurable days at their waterfront home on lake LBJ with family and friends. He especially enjoyed the time spent in the water and fishing with the young grandsons. He found great contentment in boating and fishing in the "Highland Lakes" and at every Texas seaport from Rockport to Port Isabel. After his retirement, he and his wife enjoyed many extensive trips throughout the Northwestern part of this great Country. During their 58 years together before her passing on 23 November 2010, they enjoyed many different hobbies including her many dolls, his antique radios, old fishing tackle, brewery collectables, and guns. He was an active tennis player for many years and found great camaraderie on the tennis courts with a dozen or more good friends, He was a generous, loving, caring husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He loved his church and enjoyed a special fellowship with other believers.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Merle Callaway Mitchell, parents, John Elwood and Lola Mitchell, and sister and brother-in-law Patti and Jack Obets He is survived by daughter Sharon (Roy) Lewis, son David (Carol) Mitchell, grandchildren, John, Chad (Jessica), and Tyler Mitchell, Shane (Alejandra), Jason (Sydney), and Ryan (Dominique) Lewis and great grandchildren Layton and Lola Mitchell, Natalie, Kacey, Cody, Liam, and Thomas Lewis, brother, Edgar Wayne (Suzy) Mitchell of Surfside TX, and many special nieces and nephews.
