Joseph Goldzieher Obituary

Joseph Goldzieher
September 21, 1919 - July 19, 2024
Joseph W. Goldzieher is the last survivor of the group of pioneers who, following the early pivotal investigations of hormonal contraception, transformed an idea into an endless series of orally administered contraceptives, universally known as 'the pill'. They are utilized today by tens of millions of women. He published over 400 medical research papers, the original print copies now housed in the Semmelweis Medical Library in Budapest. In addition to his private practice of endocrinology in New York with his renowned father, Dr. Max Goldzieher, and in San Antonio for many decades, he served as Director of Endocrine Research in the OB/GYN Department at Baylor University.
Goldzieher was born on 21 September 1919, in Budapest, Hungary, into a family of famous scholars and physicians. He reached, in enviable condition, the age of 104. He was the father of a university professor who also contributed to the field of reproductive health; the grandfather of three accomplished women; and the great-grandfather of five great grandchildren. A long-time resident of San Antonio, Texas, he was among the early cohort of scientists to head the Southwest Foundation for Research, now called the Texas Biomedical Research Institute. Goldzieher enjoyed fencing, hunting, Asian art, and especially his prize-winning English setters. He attributed his longevity to good genes, pastries, Hungarian salami and fine wines. His devoted wife of more than 60 years pre-deceased him in February. He is survived also by the loving family of his wife, always present in his life. The family thanks the caregivers of AA Care Services and Heart of Texas Hospice. Contributions in his memory can be made to the Nature Conservancy.

To dearest cousin Michelle,
I have only just seen the sad news of your father's passing. I only met him once, when he visited Sydney many years ago, but was struck by his passionate interest in the world around him and his fearless and forthright views and opinions which marked him as a man of towering intellect and confidence in those views and opinions. A strong and unforgettable man.
Much love to you and your family

I first met Dr Goldzieher in May of 1985 as a young 24 yo woman Patient in San Antonio and he changed my life! Every visit to his Office , there would be an Orchid on his Desk and he would tell me where he had collected it from often from somewhere he had lectured before it in the USA or on the other side of the world!!!! I loved these visits!! I was a Patient of his off and on for almost 15(?) years!! Thank you, Dr Goldzieher!!

One of Dr. Goldzieher“s passions was conservation of the natural world. I knew him through that and his involvement with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) here in Texas. He visited many of our projects and was a wonderful travel companion. We are grateful for his support of our work.

My thoughts are with his dear daughter and family. I am proud that I could be instrumental in getting Dr. Joseph Goldzieher's research papers to the Semmelweis Medical Library in Budapest, where his life's work will live on in the research of colleagues and medical students.
