Joseph Theodore (J.T.) Mooney Jr.
October 5, 1943 - September 9, 2025
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of Joseph Theodore Mooney Jr. who passed away on September 9, 2025 at Northeast Methodist Hospital in San Antonio at the age of 81. J.T. was born on October 5, 1943 in San Antonio, TX to Joseph Theodore Mooney Sr. and Ora Belle Nichols Mooney. He was a beloved father, husband and cherished friend.
After graduating from Harlandale High School, J.T. immediately joined the U.S. Army as a Military Policeman going to Vietnam and Germany. He was an expert marksman in pistol, rifle and carbine. He flew over 150 combat missions over hostile territory in Vietnam and over 1000 flying missions when attached to the 114th Aviation Company for nine months in the capacity of door gunner of the UH-1B helicopter. During his military career he received 19 air medals and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm for demonstrating extraordinary heroism, valor, and gallantry in combat operations during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged after three years and then worked for Western Electric, Southwestern Bell and AT&T where he retired after 35 years of service. J.T. enjoyed hunting, fishing, speedboat racing, classic cars (especially his beloved "Candyman"), games of chance and traveling around the world with his wife, friends and family.
He had many blessings in this life. He was preceded in death by his loving parents; son Wesley Mooney; sisters Avis Christoff, Janet Harper and Doris McDougall; and brothers Roy Mooney, Richard Mooney, and William Mooney, Sr.
J.T. is survived by his loving wife, Jeanette Mooney; children Darla Tackett (Rob) and Kellie Mitchell (Kirk); four grandchildren, Dustin, Demi, Claire and Catelyn; brother Terry Mooney; sisters-in-law Sharon Mooney and Susie Mooney; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Jeanette's children Lisa Parnes (Gordon) and Stephanie Schmidt (Bubba); four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and Jeanette's many siblings.
Funeral service is scheduled for 9:45 AM on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Ft. Sam Houston National Memorial Cemetery, Pavillion 5 with Military Honors.
Memorial donations may be given to the charity of one's choice.
