Josephine Tucker Obituary
Josephine (Pimmie) Spencer Tucker died on Tuesday, May 6, 2003 at home surrounded by her family. She was born on April 25, 1916 in San Antonio, Texas. She was the daughter of Mary Vance Spencer and Alexander Burke Spencer. She was a direct descendant of the original Canary Islanders who settled in San Antonio in 1732 and of John W. Smith, the Alamo's last messenger and San Antonio's first mayor. A 1933 graduate of Saint Mary's Hall, Pimmie went on to attend Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She made her debut in San Antonio in 1935. She was a duchess and then was the queen in the Order of the Alamo's 1937 coronation. Pimmie married Robert Edwin Tucker on June 26, 1937 in St. Mark's Episcopal Church. A devoted and beloved wife and mother, Pimmie spent her life rearing her five children and actively participating in the San Antonio community. As a child, Pimmie and her mother while working for the Red Cross, greeted WWI veterans arriving home by train. As a lifetime member, St. Mark's Church played an important role in her life. At St. Mark's, she served in several capacities: as the director of the Altar Guild, as a member of St. Margaret's Guild and was also one of the initiators of the Lenten Luncheon Program. Pimmie was a former President of the Junior League of San Antonio, the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, the Military Civilian Club, the Conservation Society and the Beautify San Antonio Association. During World War II, Pimmie worked as a staff assistant in the American Red Cross; she was also one of the original founders of the Auxiliary of Santa Rosa Children's Hospital and served on the board of the Alcoholic Rehabilitation Center. She was a member of the San Antonio Country Club and The Assembly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Tucker, who died in 1984, and her brothers, Alexander Burke Spencer Jr. and Milton Vance Spencer, as well as her sisters, Mary Vance Spencer and Jeanne Spencer Lodovic. Pimmie is survived by a large and adoring family- her children, Robert and Anne Tucker, Mary Cassell, Josie and Julian Robertson, Julia and Nick Rasmussen, George and Jana Tucker; her grandchildren, Maria and Lea Tucker, Bennett Smith, Tucker and Angela Cassell, Vance and Mary Cassell, Annie and Robert Weibel, Spencer and Sarah Robertson, Julian Robertson, Alexander Robertson, Elizabeth Rasmussen, Spencer Rasmussen, and Nicole Rasmussen; and great grandchildren, Vance Cassell, Spencer Cassell, Claire Cassell, and Sydney Weibel. Her niece, Maidie Spencer Liebmann, was her constant companion. The family requests that memorial contributions be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 315 East Pecan St., San Antonio, TX 78205 or the Cancer Therapy and Research Center, P.O. Box 1657, San Antonio, TX 78296. Interment Services will be held Thursday, May 8th at Sunset Memorial Park at 3:00 P.M. A 4:00 P.M.
