Lorena Holden Obituary

May 26, 1916 - April 5, 2015
Lorena Allen Holden was called home to be with our Lord on Easter morning. She was 98 years young. Lorena was born in McKinney, TX on May 26, 1916 but grew up in San Antonio and attended Jefferson High School. In 1935 she married Freeman Allen, who served as a Navy flight instructor during WWII and died in a 1944 training accident. She earned a private pilot's license in 1946 and was Bonita Granville's stand in for the movie Strike it Rich. Her face adorned a billboard in Monterey, California. In 1952 she married Maury Holden. They were married for 45 happy years and had two children, Maury died in 1997. She was a proud Army wife - handling the duties of an officer's wife with quiet efficiency. She was a leader who didn't know it - in fact if you called her a leader she would probably argue with you. She set a powerful example for others to follow. Lorena was a volunteer at the Fort Sam Houston Thrift Shop. She devoted countless hours to Boysville Thrift Shop and earned designation as an Archangel. Lorena had a true servant's heart and spent her whole life taking care of others. Her love was unconditional and unending. Lorena was the world's greatest mom! She helped rear her younger siblings and when she had two children of her own, she dedicated herself to their well-being. Our home was the house where the kids came to hang out and anyone who wandered in the door was soon treated to a hug, a sandwich and a plate of cookies. Lorena loved her SPURS from year one when Maury was one of the original investors. She watched her last game from her hospital bed and there was a victory over Denver. She was the Spurs Number ONE fan. Most importantly, Mom was a woman of faith. Her life was guided by her love for Jesus Christ. No matter the challenges she faced, she was always steadfast in her beliefs. She was a member of the Fellowship of San Antonio. She was also a "TV Member" of First Baptist Church. Lorena is survived by her daughter, Laury; son, Mickey and his two children, Max and Belle; step-daughters, Lee Long and husband, Claude, Lynn Rash and husband, Bill; grandchildren, Katie, Alice, John Holden, Elli, John and David Maurice and 21 great-grandchildren; nephews, Allan, Bill, Lee and Charles Van Fleet, Lynne Coral and Afton. We will all miss her deeply. Visitation will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Porter Loring Mortuary on McCullough Ave. A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, April 17, 2015 at 9:30 am at Fort Sam Houston National Houston Cemetery with a Memorial Service to follow at 1:00 pm at Fellowship of San Antonio, 23755 Canyon Golf Road, San Antonio, TX 78258. In lieu of flowers contributions can be sent to Boysville, Fellowship of San Antonio or the TV ministry of First Baptist Church. You are invited to sign the guestbook at www.porterloring.com
