Lucile Helland Obituary
Lucile Evelyn Trabue Helland died on September 18, 2010, after a brief illness. A longtime resident of San Antonio, she was born December 7, 1918, in Waxahachie, the daughter of Lucile Evelyn Trabue and Erling Hans Karl Helland. Named for her mother who died shortly after her birth, she was raised by her grandparents and aunt, Mr. & Mrs. Hans Engel Hansen Helland and Miss. Marie Elfrieda Julie Helland. Lucile attended Trinity University (then located in Waxahachie) and the University of Texas. She worked at Stowers Furniture Company, and later as a second grade teacher at Travis Elementary School, where she took over her own second grade teacher's position. She was predeceased by her aunt Marie Helland, two uncles, G. Archie Helland and Sven P. Helland, and two first cousins, Frances Helland Watts and James H. Helland. She is survived by three first cousins, Richard E. Helland of Columbus, Ohio, George A. Helland, Jr., of Houston and Linda Helland Bowsher of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and numerous other family members. The family wishes to thank her caretakers, Helen, Nancy, Celia, Lucy, Maria, Olivia and Connie, for their devoted and loving service. Following a private burial service, a memorial service will be held at 2:30 PM, Wednesday, September 22, at Bethany Congregational Church, 500 Pilgrim Drive, Pastor Gerald Metzger officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Bethany Congregational Church, 500 Pilgrim Drive, San Antonio, TX 78213 or a charity of choice.

Lucile was an incredible and inspirational presence in the lives of so many of San Antonio's youths, I having been one of them. She was not only an incredible teacher who provided motivation and challenge but also a friend and a living example of positive and rewarding adulthood. I think of her so often and wish so much that my own children could have known her. Thank you so much Lucile with everlasting Love, Respect and Memories.
