On Saturday, October 9, 2021, Marc Allen South went to be with the Lord after losing a short but hard-fought battle with lymphoma and end-stage renal disease. Marc had a strong desire to live and never gave up hope even to the very end.
Marc was born in Glen Dale, West Virginia, to the late Delbert C. and Jeannine D. (Weekly) South. He spent his youth in Monroeville, Ohio, where he cultivated a life-long love for music and a very unique-to-Marc sense of humor.
After high school, Marc attended Michigan State University, graduating with a degree in Political Science from James Madison College. He spent most of his career as a National Bank Examiner for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and was an expert in his field. Marc had a remarkable intellect and a vast knowledge of a wide array of subjects. His intellectual curiosity led him to pursue post-graduate education in finance, city planning, as well as history.
Marc was a bibliophile, and one of his "happy places" was Barnes & Noble bookstore. Every year for Christmas, he would send B&N gift cards to his kids, their spouses, and his grandkids. His ability to read and retain information from books, newspapers and online articles was well above the level of a mere mortal. In addition, Marc found immense joy in many different genres of music and shared his favorite songs and albums with those he loved. He played the organ for Episcopalian church services for years and was a talented organist.
Marc loved his grandchildren dearly and made an effort to take each of them to "Grandparents University" at Michigan State when they turned 11 years of age. He took classes with them side-by-side and each time came back with funny stories of events that took place on these weekends that seemed to fit the personalities of each grandchild.
Marc also had a quirky sense of humor. He loved "The Onion" and would frequently message articles on Facebook from that site or others to his adult children when he found it pertained to them. Although annoying at times, in retrospect, this was a very endearing gesture. At the same time, Marc was a supportive father who often gave a pep talk to his kids ending with "just don't embarrass us!"
After decades apart, Marc became engaged to be married to Martha Jones, a dear friend from his college days at Michigan State. Martha and Marc both shared an appreciation for music and history. They both also took great pleasure in their cats, Nigel and Melanie. Marc was happiest when he was with Martha, and she was present with him in his final moments.
Marc is survived by his children, Amy (Dan) Pachuta, Andrew (Mary) South, Audrey (Joseph) Regan, Jennifer (Chris) Stoll, and his grandchildren Julia, Erin, and Patrick Comerford; James, Mia, and Alice South; Abby and Bridget Regan; and Michael Stoll.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
