Maria Conchas Obituary

Maria Magdalena Conchas, age 90, passed away at her home in San Antonio, surrounded by her children on May 26, 2003. She was born on May 25, 1913 in Laredo, Texas to Juana Gonzales and Jesus Bonifacio Navarro. She gave her love and her life to her family, as a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and aunt. Maria made many friendships too. She lived life to the fullest. The overriding theme of her life was courage and optimism in the face of challenge. As a youth, she endured the hardships of the Great Depression in New York. Despite her young age, she found work and was able to contribute to her family's household. On September 16, 1932, she married Miguel Conchas of Monterrey, Mexico. He died in 1952, and she admirably rose to the task of raising their 7 children. In the 60's, she and her children moved to San Antonio. There she worked as a nanny and helped raise her grandchildren. She had many interests and hobbies; cooking, gardening, sewing, pets, singing and reading. She loved to travel making time to visit friends and family in Oregon, North Carolina, Mississippi, Ohio, Michigan, Panama and Mexico. She is survived by her 7 children: Hipolita Conchas, Santiago Conchas, Guadalupe Conchas, Jesus Conchas, Micaela Roberson, Miguel Conchas and Maria-Magdalene Amaro; 13 grandchildren, Santiago, Cecilia, Laura, Samuel Ray, Miguel, Greg, Joseph, Daniella, Christina, Monica, Erica, Patty and Leonardo; and four great grandchildren, Samantha Ann, Taylor, Jordan and Christina.
