Maria Markey

Maria Garcia Markey was taken into her Lord's arms on January 6, 2012 at St. Luke's Nursing Home in Carthage, Missouri. She was 88 years old. Born in Navasota, Texas on April 14, 1923, Maria was raised in Del Rio and San Antonio, Texas. In 1953, she married John William Markey at Christ the King Catholic Church in San Antonio. He preceded her in death. Following employment at Kelly AFB, Maria was the librarian and secretary at Christ the King Catholic School in San Antonio for 25 years. She then went to work for the San Antonio Public Library System until 2003 when she retired and moved to Joplin, Missouri. She is survived by her five children, John William Markey, Jr., Cecilia Ann Medina (Fred), Susan Eileen Markey, all of San Antonio; Ruth Markey Guzman (Juan), Joplin, MO and Marie Markey Cilek (Ron), Colorado Springs, CO ; grandchildren, Fred Medina Jr. (Giselle), John Albert Medina, Megan Medina Leal (Juan), Chelsea Rae Markey Reeves (Steve) Erik Landeros Cilek; granddaughter and special caregiver, Sonia Raquel Guzman; great grandchildren, Matthew, Braden, Riley, Aaliyah; and devoted caregiver, Cheryl Fussell. A visitation will begin, Sunday January 15, 2012, 5:00 p.m. at Trevino Funeral Home, 226 Cupples Rd with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. A funeral procession will depart the funeral home, Monday, January 16, 2012 at 8:30 a.m. for a 9:00 a.m. Mass to be celebrated at St. Dominic's Catholic Church with interment to follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association in Maria's name.

I'm not sure we ever actually met, but I've learned a lot about Mrs. Markey by observing her children and grandchildren's complete devotion to her. She obviously lived her life in a way that allowed her last moments to be surrounded by people who loved her and took good care of her. My condolences to her family and friends.
