MORENO
Maria Teresa Moreno, 94, went home to the Lord and Heaven on May 24, 2014, at our home in San Antonio with her sons by her side. She was born August 9, 1919, in D'Hanis to Francisco Fernandez and Teodora Garza Fernandez. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 65 years, Gilberto Moreno; her parents; brothers, Andres, Santos, Francisco and Enrigue; sisters, Otila and Juanita Fernandez. She is survived by her loving sons, Mario and Hector Moreno; her grandchildren, Christopher and Amielle Moreno; and her great-grandchildren, Cayli, Christian, Delycia and Collin Moreno. Her strong faith and devotion to God began with the example of her parents and the nuns at the D Hanis Catholic elementary school she attended for three years. She was a devout Catholic and attended Mass with her husband, Gilberto, throughout their lives until their age and health declined. Our mother, in her youth, was the most beautiful woman to come from the D'Hanis. She won many beauty contests in Texas and in Mexico. The most important thing in our mother's life was her family. We were truly blessed to have had the best mom anybody could have. She is what kept us together through the very hard times. It takes a very special mom to have helped us persevere when it did not seem possible. She stressed education to us daily. It was the key to a better life. Thank God we listen to her. Mario got two degrees at Texas A&M, one at Harvard, and one at University of Virginia of and became a lawyer, and then served as US Assistant Secretary of Education under then President Clinton. Hector Moreno got a degree in education from Southwest Texas State, where he starred as defensive end on the 1971 football team, that was ranked number one in the nation among NAIA colleges. Our family is very blessed to have countless memories and a legacy that will live on in each and every day for us. Many people would consider it a burden to care for their elderly parents but Hector considered it a blessing from God. He took care of Mom and Dad 24/7 for the last 14 years. Our Dad passed away August 12, 2007. God knows at times it was not easy, but the good times we spent as a family together we will always cherish for the rest of our lives. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 28, from 6 to 8 p.m, with a Rosary recited at 7 p.m., at Holy Cross Catholic Church, D'Hanis. Funeral service will be Thursday, May 28, 10 a.m. at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, followed by interment at San Francisco Cemetery, D'Hanis. To leave a message for the family, visit
