Marilyn Plunkett Obituary

November 1, 1930 - November 24, 2015
Marilyn W. Plunkett, passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 in San Antonio. She was born in Brooklyn, New York to William and Katherine (Lowndes) Wilson. Her parents moved to Bound Brook, N.J. when she was in eighth grade. A classmate was Guy Plunkett whom she some years later claimed she decided she was going to marry whether he knew it or not. She graduated from Bound Brook High School in 1948 and from Orange Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Orange, N.J. with an RN degree in 1951. As she predicted, she and Guy were married shortly after he started medical school where her earnings as a nurse helped fund his education and internship in Buffalo, N.Y. She then became an army wife for the next 32 years and was his beloved partner, helpmate and supporter while raising four wonderful sons, becoming very active in their military communities, serving in Army Community Service, acting as a volunteer school nurse and newborn nursery nurse, being a cub scout den mother, participating with ever greater responsibility in officer wives clubs culminating in the presidency of the Heidelberg, Germany Officer Wives Club in the late 1970s. In addition, she was often a surrogate mother to resident physicians and their wives, a baby sitter while Guy delivered the mother of a family addition, and a wonderful cook and hostess to colleagues and visiting professors. After retirement she loved travel in their motor home in the 49 states in North America, a good part of Canada and parts of Mexico plus a few trips to old stamping grounds in Europe and Hawaii plus some pleasure cruises. In between trips, she was a long time driver and grocery shopper for NESA. Almost always from the beginning of the marriage, there was a dog or two also benefitting from her love and attention. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert DeLano Plunkett and her sister, Kathryn Phillips. Marilyn is survived by her husband of 63 years, Col. Guy D. Plunkett, M.D.; her sons, Guy Plunkett III and wife, Joanne, Wilson T. Plunkett and wife, Rebecca, David J. Plunkett and wife, Elizabeth, Timothy A. Plunkett and wife, Pamela; grandchildren, Benjamin H. Plunkett, Christopher S. Plunkett and Elizabeth Jordan Plunkett; great-granddaughter, Danielle Plunkett.

Dear Guy and Boys, Marilyn was a very special friend for 49 years. She was so much fun and just one in a million of the most generous people ever. Bob & I had our first trip to Europe w/Marilyn and Guy as our guides. What a fabulous time! The laughter we had still makes me smile. Much love, Jo North, Dallas

Guy,
It was a great honor to know Marilyn. She was a great example of what all of us would hope to be someday. I'll always remember how friendly and supportive she was during our Brooke General Hospital days. I considered her my mentor. My deepest sympathy to the entire Plunkett family.
