Marshall Hernandez

Marshall's smile and laugh were infectious; his hugs enveloping.

A lifelong resident of San Antonio, Marshall grew up on the Southside of San Antonio attending St. John Berchmans Catholic School, Lowel Middle School and graduating from Burbank High School where he met and shortly thereafter, married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth Martinez.

As an adolescent, Marshall could be found running around with the neighborhood kids playing basketball, baseball or playing guitar in their "garage" band, Rainy Day Sunshine Cloud.

He was part of the first graduating class of Advertising Art students at San Antonio Community College (SAC). While at SAC, he won a design contest creating the L&M Bookstore logo.

His creative talents evolved from drafting in high school to a career in graphic arts. He created logos, designed brochures, programs, invitations, menus and story boards, among others. His most notable work includes a number of projects for Dollywood and his most recent work with Guy Fieri's Flavortown USA designing the restaurant and Tiki Bar menus.

Marshall enjoyed all genres of music and extended his love of music and talents to his grandsons purchasing and teaching them any musical instrument they were interested in, especially the guitar.

Marshall would often be seen sporting his favorite team attire: Spurs, Cowboys and Longhorns, but more often than not sporting his grandsons' latest sports team.

Marshall lived for his family, especially his daughter and grandchildren, godchildren and, of course, his parents and siblings. Working from home, he made it a point to carve out time for his loved ones; attending Father-Daughter dances, Grandparents Day, and any school academic or sporting event. You name it, he would not hesitate. His grandsons anxiously awaited the moment he announced he was done with work and could take them outside to ride their bikes, play catch; or, if it was too late to play outside, play video or board games for hours instead. Marshall often told his daughter, "They didn't get any Papo time yet, so let them stay a little longer."

His grandchildren appreciated and loved every second they spent with their Papo. Being close to him was not enough, they had to be in his arms, lap or on his shoulders.

Even the neighbors were the beneficiaries of his largess -- from taking out or bringing in their garbage bins, collecting their packages (ahead of the porch pirates) to pet sitting. Marshall was the go-to guy for so many people. His green thumb was the envy of family, friends and neighbors.

Marshall will be dearly missed by his loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, George and parents Joe and Aurora Z. Hernandez.

He is survived by his life partner, Elizabeth Martinez; his daughter, Clarisa Sanchez (Alfred III); grandsons, Alfred IV, Vincent and Marcial; brother, Dan Hernandez (Eloy Ortiz); sisters, Christine Hernandez and Eleanor H. Ramirez; godchildren, Jason Jacob and Alyssa Yruegas; and Aaron Cornelius.
