Mary Schultz Obituary

SCHULTZ
SCHULTZ: Mary Ruth Montez (Maria Refugio) entered into eternal peace on February 17th at 92. She was born on January 18, 1920 in San Antonio, Texas and suffered with Alzheimer's disease for many years. Mary was a typical Hispanic mother from the early generations that emphasized the importance of faith, family, love, culture and food. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother-She will be missed dearly. Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Reyes G. Schultz; her son Jesus; her parents, José Davila Montez and Manuela Montez; her siblings, Maria Dolores Cruz, Inez Montez, Manuela (Meme) and Ramon. She is survived by her nine children: Ray Anthony Schultz, Elizabeth Murphy, Mary Guadalupe Roussin, Mary Theresa Vasquez, Robert Schultz, Ray Schultz, Sylvia Stillings, Carol Burger and Pat Kleitz-Hearn; and Mary's siblings Beatrice Montez Rodriguez and José Montez, Jr. Mary had such a large heart that she loved and helped raise four of her grandchildren, Don, Debra, Doreen and Lewis. She leaves behind a total of 28 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Mary's liveliness is brought to life through her most distinguishing feature, her "funny faces" while caring for her children and grandchildren. A very religious person, Mary practiced her faith by teaching doctrina classes to the local catechist children because she felt religion was important in everyone's life, including her own. She used many "dichos," - one most notably: "Dios no nos dar algo que no podemos hacer, estamos calgardo Nuestra Cruz. Her love inspired one of her daughter's to write a book on Alzheimer's entitled: Mi Mamacita Tiene Alzheimer's (My Beloved Mother has Alzheimer's), to help care for a loved one with this disease. The family would like to give special thanks to "Caregivers" who cared for our mother 24/7 for many years, to the early private-duty caregivers to Heart To Heart hospice, the doctor and staff. Also, thanks to the many family members and friends who sent prayers. If you wish to donate in lieu of flowers, please give to the local Alzheimer's Association for research and outreach. Services: Alamo Funeral Home, with visitation from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thurs, 23 Feb; and 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb 24th with Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral home procession at 9:30 a.m. February, 25th for 10:15 a.m. mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial to follow at San Fernando Cemetery II.

Our condolences to the entire family. My wife lost her mother to that terrible disease so we understand the toll it takes. I am a friend of Ray's. It is said that the measure of a man can be assessed by his heritage and upbringing. Ray is a great man, husband, father and military officer. So, it is clear that Mary Schultz was indeed a wonderful woman, wife, mother and in every sense a lady. God bless you all. We are sorry for your loss.
