Michael McCord Obituary
Our beloved Michael Wylie McCord, husband and daddy, journeyed from his abundantly full life on earth to his eternal home with his Savior Jesus greeting him, on July 21, 2013. Mike McCord, M.D. passed away at age 56 with his loving wife of 30 years at his side. He died from a massive pulmonary embolism following emergency surgery, while serving on a medical mission trip to Guatemala. As his parents before him, he lived an honest life based on the values of education, hard work, putting family first, and having respect for others. He left a legacy of enduring faithful love for his wife, two daughters, son-in-laws, extended family, and friends. His daughters are grateful for his dedication as a father providing guidance, wisdom, consistency, and unfailing support. Michael's passion for medical mission work in Guatemala began in 2002. The following ten years he selflessly led the San Antonio Medical Team to Guatemala through HELPS International and University United Methodist Church, coordinating and providing medical care for over 15,000 Guatemalans. He was a co-founder of San Antonio Guatemalan Endeavor (SAGE), the non-profit organization that continues to partner with these two organizations to provide care to the needy. Michael was posthumously awarded the Order of the Quetzal, the highest honor awarded to civilians by the Guatemalan government on Tuesday July 23, 2013. He was given a heroes escort to the airport by the Guatemalan military. He touched the lives of not only his patients but also team members, serving as a mentor and teacher to every life he touched. Mike's legacy of unconditional love for family, faith and service to God, generosity to all people, and enthusiasm for life each day will be carried on. Michael was born March 16, 1957 in Lake Charles, LA. He graduated from Rice University in 1979 and Southwestern Medical School in 1983. He has practiced Anesthesia in the San Antonio community since 1987 as a member of the Spiller division of Tejas Anesthesia. Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Lorine McCord, and brother-in-law, Rev. Steve Floeck. His influence will continue through his adoring wife, Laurie; his treasured daughters and their husbands, Becky and Barrett Black and Sarah and Clint Bonn; his siblings Tim and Suzanne McCord, Cathy and Bryan Frank, Karen Floeck, and Pat and Liena McCord; mother-in-law Sue Hill; in-laws Linda and Wayne Woodward, Karen and Tony Chutek, Lisa and Frank Giangrosso, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Laurie and family,
Mike was a faithful friend to me, a devoted physician, a reliable colleague and an effective advocate and representative for those who rarely have a voice, our patients. I am shocked to learn that I will not see Mike any more. It appears to me that Mike died doing what his heart dictated him to do, take care of those in need. That's the Mike I know. I will sorely miss him.

Dearest Laurie and family, Len and I were saddened to hear of Mike's passing. I tried to imagine the reception Mike received in heaven as Jesus welcomed Mike home but I'm sure my brain couldn't comprehend the magnificence! Dear Laurie, Becky, and Sarah, Mike was truly the embodiment of this quote about life: "In gospel language, either we will gain our lives by losing them to become channels of God's love, healing, forgiveness, and reconciliation – or we will lose our lives by gathering to ourselves all that has been given us and using it first and foremost for our own ends." Mike has gained eternal life and we will remember the love he gave to God through the selfless giving of himself to all of us. We love you.

I'm a nurse that worked with Dr MCord. He was an amazing anesthesiologist who touched the lives and hearts of so many co workers and PATIENTS. I was so shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. He truely was an amazing amazing person and be will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. God Bless.

Our lives were enriched by knowing Mike. He was the ultimate example of a great, godly man. Your beautiful, loving family inspired our family to be a better family. Dr. McCord was one of those rare individuals: a kind, compassionate person and an excellent, dedicated, conscientious physician. For the many years that I worked with him at Methodist Hospital he was one of the truly bright rays of sunshine on my evening shift. "Who's anesthesia this afternoon?" I'd ask. "It's Dr McCord, Michaele." I knew then that not only would my patients be cared for, with a soul-deep caring, but I would be listened to also. Thank you, Dr. Mike, for caring and sharing with us all. We love you. Notice, that is the present tense. Thank you and God's blessings to you (you know that already!) and your dear family. Although I haven't worked with you for 17 years, I'll miss you.

Dear Laurie,
I am so sorry for your loss. We all will miss him, he was such of giver of his time and talents to help those less fortunate and "hooked" me to make several trips to GT as well. Actually just hooked me once, the rest of the time I just said when? We know that he is in heaven with our Lord and was welcomed with open arms and heard "Well done, my good and faithful servant".
