Mike Casanova Obituary

July 23, 1930 - September 15, 2016
Mike G. Casanova, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather entered rest on September 15, 2016 as he graciously accepted his invitation to be with our Lord. He was born in Floresville, TX on July 23, 1930. At the age of 16 he joined the US Army Air Corp and was awarded the WW II Victory medal. In 1954 Mike also served in the USARR 90th Infantry Division Unit at Ft. Sam Houston and in 1963 transferred to the USAFR 433rd Alamo Wing Unit until he retired in 1977. Mike was activated in 1968 and served a tour in Korea while in the Air Force. He worked at Kelly AFB for 35 years in Radar Avionics and later in Special Weapons. He was always involved in church activities and was an usher at St. Luke Catholic Church for many years and participated in the ACTS retreats. He was a member of the American Legion Post (617) where he served as Commander for one term. Mike was especially proud of becoming a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus at San Fernando Cathedral which allowed him to serve as an usher when Pope John Paul II came to San Antonio in September 1987. In addition, Mike enjoyed learning about science and technology and was a natural athlete who played for the San Antonio Wolverines independent football team which held international benefit games at Alamo stadium against Monterrey Tech in the 1950s for the "Help-A-Boy" camp. He was a skilled baseball player, excellent at billiards and loved playing golf.
Our much-loved Mike will be remembered for his devotion to his family and his country and his warm and contagious smile. He had a great sense of humor and was known for his jokes. Mike will be greatly missed by all his family and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents Jesus and Juanita Casanova, sisters in law Lucy and Sylvia Casanova, and brother in law Lawrence Boes. He is survived by his loving wife Lilia; children Yolanda Patti (husband Mathew), Mike (wife Denise) and Rosalinda; grandsons Daniel Chapa (wife Michelle) and Jarrod Chapa (wife Tiffany); great-grandchildren Olivia, Michael, Isabella, Aviana, and Roman; brothers Daniel (wife Bertha), Samuel, Jesse (wife Elva), deacon Ismael, and sister Rachel Boes; also, many nephews and nieces who loved him very much. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, SA South Texas Chapter. Viewing will be held on Sunday, September 25, 2016 from 5 to 9 pm, Rosary at 7 pm, at Sunset Northwest Home Chapel, 6321 Bandera Rd. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on September 26, 2016, 9:30 am at St. Luke Catholic Church, 4603 Manitou Dr. Funeral procession will follow to Ft. Sam Houston for Interment at 11:30 am.

We especially want to thank the staff at St. Francis Nursing Home, 630 W Woodlawn Ave, for the compassionate care he received.

We are so very sorry for your loss Mrs. Casanova and family. My father "emilio maldonado" told us the rosary was going to be held at St Lukes church so we headed out yesterday to find out that was not the case. We left a message with your son in law yesterday. We love you so very much. His smile is illuminating the heavens above!! Our deepest sympathy.
