DR. MORRIS EMORY FRANKLIN JR. obituary, 1942-2020, Fort Worth, TX

MORRIS FRANKLIN Obituary

Dr. Morris Emory Franklin, Jr., world renowned surgeon, passed away August 2, 2020, after emergency surgery. He was born on August 10, 1942, to Morris Emory Franklin and Dorothy Downes Franklin in Fort Worth, Texas, where his father worked in the Corps of Engineers for the World War II effort. In 1945 the Franklins moved back home to Poteet, to take over the family business, the Franklin Bros. store. Morris Jr. grew up in Poteet , working in the store, delivering groceries, learning about mechanics and farming, taking care of his dog's wounds, and singing tenor at the annual family Christmas celebrations. Active in Scouting he earned his Eagle rank. He graduated from Poteet High School in 1960 where he excelled in academics and atheltics. He graduated from the University of North Texas before entering Southwestern Medical School in Dallas in 1963.

After medical school he came to San Antonio, starting his 53 year career by working at Robert B. Green Hospital (now the University of Texas Medical School), for his residency training in general surgery. His next stop was the Army's 67th Evac in Pleiku, Viet Nam where it was not unusual for him to operate for 36 hours straight. His return took him to Fort Collins, Colorado, before he took over a medical practice by the Southeast Baptist Hospital in San Antonio. His career as a surgeon took an unimaginable leap when Morris and his colleagues attended an out- of- state seminar on the surgery of the future, laproscopy. With his colleagues, Dr. Bill Schussler and Dr, Joe Tippett, Morris developed new surgical techniques and, in conjunction with surigical equipment companies, new surgical devices. This team then started to train doctors around the world in countries such as France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Great Britain, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Brazil, and Mexico, as well as many U.S. states.

Dr. Franklin served as a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the San Antonio University of Texas Medical School. He taught residents trained in foreign and US medical schools as interns in his own practice at his Texas Endosurgery Institute. Many of these doctors are now teaching at medical schools across the country. He authored 128 publications and received numerous recognitions for his work in his field. In 2018 the Southside Chamber of Commerce named him as a Southside Legend at their annual gala. The surgical wing of Mission Trail Hospital is named in his honor. He held membership in a number of prestigious surgical societies. Unknown by the public, Dr. Franklin performed surgery on notables from across the US and a number of foreign countries, but his heart remained with the people of South Texas.

Dr. Franklin was a sixth generation Texan, with a heritage dating back prior to the Texas War for Independence.. He was the great-great grandson of one of the earliest doctors in Bexar County. In recent times he especially enjoyed spending time with his son, a Cubmaster and his grandsons, who both earned their Arrow of Light rank. He also enjoyed making trips to the family lake house that he helped build as a teenager and to his property in Montana. His constant companion has been Cindy Seltzer, who shared in his love of life and adventure. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Emory and Dorothy Franklin. He is survived by his former wife Linda Franklin, and his son, Morris Franklin III and daughter- in- law, Dr. Anna Franklin and their children, William and Daniel of Centennial, Colorado; his sister, Patricia West and her husband, Pat and their children; and his brother, Richard Franklin and his wife, Janie and their children.

He is survived my numerous relatives, friends and colleagues throughout the world, as well.

Due to the pandemic, a celebration of his life will be planned at a future date.

He saved my sister's life! He would come in the room at all hours to check on her and he would tell her I'm going to get you better. Definitely he did! He was an amazing Doctor I will never forget him especially when he would sit on the bed and explain everything he was going to do. He is greatly missed! God has gained a great surgeon!

My Grand Father did so much for me in the very little time i have been on this earth. He taught me basic thing about everyday life to how to be a man and provide for the people around you while still being emotionally reliable and that is what i will strive to be for the rest of my time on this earth. I was told that one of the few things he would react to in his last moments were the names of me and my brother. that is truly an honor to be so important to such an amazing man. That night i promised to take care of my mom and my dad and most importantly my little brother. God bless him and his soul.

I just became aware of Dr. Franklin’s passing. I’m very sorry to hear it. He was a friend and colleague of my dad for many years, and dad admired & respected him. Dr Franklin took care of members of our family & several friends during the many years we had the pleasure of knowing him. We felt thankful that he worked on our side of town. It was always nice to see him around, out & about in one of his unique cars. He was truly one of a kind. Please accept my sincere condolences, Franklin family & loved ones. He will be missed.

I was the X-ray tech on his first laparoscopic surgery, then worked with him for the next 12 years. The man was truly one of the most gifted surgeons the Lord has ever produced, yet I don’t ever remember any of his patients saying he talked down to them. He had a down home bedside manor and a willingness to answer all his patients questions. He always made me feel like a friend. Whenever I was asked by friends, family or colleagues whom I would recommend for general surgery he was always my first choice. He will be truly missed.

Dr. Franklin operated on me in 1995. Took my gallbladder out laparoscopically. If I remember right he told me I was one of the very first patients for that type of surgery. I was petrified of going under anesthesia and of having the surgery done at all. I was about 30 years old and from the time I found out I needed my gallbladder out I waited a whole year and would just suffer through the pain until I finally decided that it was time to have it done. I was in hysterics when I got to the hospital, and I really thought I was going to have to have a straight jacket put on, but Dr. Franklin assured me that I would be fine. I am so thankful that he was the one that did that surgery because to this day I'm still petrified of going under anesthesia. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. After my surgery he gave me a tape of my surgery and somewhere along the line I lost that tape. I don't know who has it, but I'm sure they are amazed at the surgery. Dr. Franklin was so cool. i've often thought of him throughout the years. The southside of San Antonio lost a great surgeon .

Dr. Franklin, may God be with you. My husband, Dr. Jesus Roel Garza, trained in laparoscopic surgery under you and also a graduate of Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He passed away in 1994. A true legend has passed. Rest well Dr Franklin. I remember interviewing for a fellowship spot, it was a two day interview and I brought my boots to go country dancing on the evening between the interview days. When he found out my plan, he said no ma’am not by yourself you’re not (adding what kind of cowboy I might meet) and so I had the pleasure of Cindy taking me out for a true Texas night on the town...football game then dancing. It was my most memorable interview. And to Cindy, thank you for those memories!

In loving memory of a wonderful person. We will love you and miss you always. Morris and I had a special relationship. Not only were we friends, but colleagues as we.. Morris was the surgeon that I referred patients to for over 42 years. he was never to busy to come to assist me when necessary to care for a patient I can recall a gravely ill patient 40 years ago that I called and he assisted with care and was there until the end. He never refused a patient because they did not have insurance. Morris performed surgery on all of my family, included myself. His caring spirit and love will remain in our hears forever.

I am heart broken to hear the passing of Dr. Franklin. I live in Florida and I received the call that my mother was in ER and it wasn't good. I flew to San Antonio and met Dr. Franklin and I remember his calm voice and he told us to prepare for the worse. We were devastated. For once in my life, I felt alone and scared, my mother was all I ever known in life, and,Dr Franklin said she was a very sick woman but he was gonna do his best but to prepare for the worse, my heart fell in pieces. We didn't know what was going to happen, when he came to the visting area, he looked at us and said she was a miracle!!!! She made it and is recovering !!! I cried like i never have in my life!! He held my mother's hand and smiled at her and said" you are a miracle" . I am forever grateful to you Dr. Franklin for giving us more time with our mother. You are and will ALWAYS be our miracle!!! I'm forever grateful to you for saving my mother's life. Because of you I get to make more memories with my mother and my son gets to make memories with his grandmother. We will remember you ALWAYS and never forget your hard work and always be grateful to you. Rest peacefully you live in our hearts forever.

Sincerely, Angela Segovia, Florida

Morris, I hope you are resting, eating anything you want to and are pain free. I miss you more than I can put into words but I know we will be together again. I feel you all around me at every turn. You were my Matt Dillon in every sense of the word. You always said to me every morning you left for the hospitals, “ the sooner I go, the quicker we will be together”. We never let a moment go by that we didn’t kiss each other or say “I love you”. Ever. Sometimes 40 times a day or more. We loved each other deeply and for that I am so very blessed to have been the one chosen to hand you back to God. I love you Morris. Rest well darling.

Dr Franklin performed my lap cholecystectomy in 1995 and had the pleasure working with him at Southeast Baptist and Southwest General. I was a nurse and he would not take co-pays because he said it was his duty to take care of his nurses. He will be greatly missed.

I was a volunteer at Southeast Baptist Hospital for 38 years, about 30 years of that was in outpatient surgery. So I spent many hours volunteering for him, he was a great teacher even to me. I was there when the laparoscopic surgery was unfolding. It was my honor to take the visiting physicians and news media, to get changed to go into surgery
Also my husband and were part of the Carousel Society. He will be greatly missed. He left a great legacy.

Dr. Morris Franklin was the most innovative person I have ever met. I had the very good fortune to be associated with the early laparoscopic training courses and learned so much observing Morris and his creative mind. More significantly, however, it was so clear that Morris’ driving force was the well-being and benefit of his patients. God bless.

Sorry to hear of Dr. Franklin's passing. He saved my husbands life, if it wasn't for his intervention I would certainly have lost him. I had already been told the surgery would take place the next day by the ER doc, but when Dr. Franklin saw him he was taken to surgery immediately and he made a complete recovery. God Bless his family

I wish I had more time to get to know Morris. We live one property over from him and Cindy in Montana. We moved in just before Covid shut everything down so we didn’t get to meet them until we had been here a while. They recently hosted a lovely “Welcome to the Neighborhood” picnic with our other new neighbors and some of Cindy and Morris’ friends. I believe one of Morris’ last gifts to the world came that evening. He said the blessing before we ate and it struck a chord with me. He talked about the importance of creating a sense of community and the importance of building friendships. He & Cindy brought several families together that night and because of that, started that community of friends during a time where people are becoming more recluse and self-focused, an anti-community if sorts. I thanked him later that night for that lovely blessing. We moved from SW PA and had neighbors much closer than we do out here. And yet, our family has more friends now than we did after living in a closet built “community” for 7 years. Homes do not make a community and Morris’s knew that and blessed us with his priceless wisdom that evening.

I mourn for the memories left unrealized with this truly kind soul.

Morris was the best of the best!! He impacted my life both professionally and personally. I met Morris in 1994 at a Medical Conference and we built a very close relationship over the years. He was always there for me, and you know you are very good friends when you can give each other a hard time. Morris was a cutting edge developer in his profession but remained gracious and genuine, true to his roots. Both as a physician and a person of character, he will be sorely missed.

To the family of Dr. Morris Franklin : It is great sadness that I learned of the passing of Morris. I have known him all my life as we are both from Poteet and would see each other occasionally at diffrent times. I remember seeing at the 2019 Poteet Aggie Reunion. May God be with each and everyone of his family and help them through this difficult time.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. May the Peace, Grace and Mercy of the Lord sustain you during this difficult time. Dr. Franklin added a quality of surgical and post-op surgical care to patients in the Southeast quadrant of San Antonio that was second to None in our medical community. A great loss for all. Rest in peace Morris. Well done thy good and faithful servant!

I met him twice when I was a young man growing up in San Antonio, My stepmother Kitty worked with him at Hospital, and my Dad would take me when the Dr needed work on his Diesel engine running his sprinkler system on his ranch on occasion.
Super nice guy, prayers sent to family

I am so sorry to learn about the passing of. Dr. Franklin. I enjoyed working with him back in the early 90’s during the dawn of the laparoscopic surgery revolution. He was a fine man and an excellent surgeon. He helped me develop as a sales rep and I felt honored to have worked with him at his lab in Seguin and in the OR. To all his friends, family, peers, and loved ones, my deepest sympathy. I will be praying for all of you. He will be greatly missed.

Wonderful person. Unmeasurable kindness, very good friend, mentor, professor, and teacher. Always with a quick joke and a good piece of advice. My wife, daughters and myself will miss him deeply. We will always remember him dearly. May he rest in peace in a much better place.
