Nancy Rheams Obituary

Nancy Rheams
March 27, 1938 - March 30, 2024
Nancy Rheams, born Nancy Vye Baxley on March 27, 1938, passed away on March 30, 2024, in San Antonio. Nancy was at home, surrounded by her loved ones, where she peacefully left this Earth.

Nancy worked at the San Antonio Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association from the day of its incorporation in 1989, only retiring after more than 25 years of service. From its inception, she was THE FACE of the organization; supporting families, providing guidance and education, facilitating support groups, planning fund-raising events and so much more. Drawing on her own personal experience, it was Nancy's goal to provide all families with the tools they needed to offer the best care for their loved ones. After counseling with her, families left knowing they had been helped by a knowledgeable, empathetic person who was direct and honest while still supporting them with kindness. Her colleagues called it her "tough love"; she had a way of sternly helping families see the reality of the situation while still treating them with grace and love. Nancy was a mentor to every staff person, every volunteer, every person who walked through the door. Her impact on the Alzheimer's community was immeasurable. When she retired, she was missed tremendously; the remaining staff could only hope to be able to fill her shoes as a beloved educator, supporter, and dear friend. Her legacy with this organization will forever live on.

As a young couple Nancy and Charlie surrounded themselves with good friends. Their home was a gathering place and always filled with love and laughter. Most of these friendships have lasted throughout their lives; if you were amongst this group count yourself lucky. It was a lifelong party, with Nancy often the source of the good times.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Felix Charles "Charlie" Rheams; her son Ken, and his children, Alec and Ava; her son Steve and his wife, April, and their children, Riley and Waylon.

Nancy will be inurned in a private service at Fort Sam National Cemetery where her beloved Charlie will one day join her.
