Peter Greer Gainey
June 12, 1986 - August 14, 2025
Peter Greer Gainey of Port Aransas, Texas, died unexpectedly at his home on August 14, 2025, at the age of 39.
Peter was born in San Antonio, Texas, on June 12,1986, to Cassie and Mark Gainey, but he really came to life with the first cast of his Zebco rod and reel.
He started fishing before he walked and insisted his lure be changed with every unproductive cast. He was happy to fish any creek, pond, or tank, but he especially loved his time on the Texas coast with his parents and brother Matthew Gainey.
Growing up, Peter attended San Antonio Academy and then Central Catholic High School. He and his brother shared a passion for BMX biking and lacrosse. While attending Austin College, he spent summers working at Deep Sea Headquarters in Port Aransas. After graduating, he headed back to the coast where he earned his Captain's license and worked on deep sea fishing boats until 2010 when he decided to take a different direction.
This new path took Peter to Texas A&M where he earned a degree in Petroleum Engineering. Upon graduation he married fellow Aggie Jilliann Bartlett and went to work for Halliburton in Lafayette, Louisiana. His time with Halliburton took Peter and Jilliann to New Zealand and Australia where their first two children Mae Amelia and Samuel were born.
When Peter was transferred to Houston, the family had to give up life in the Land Down Under. With Halliburton office shutdowns during COVID, the family was allowed to move to Port Aransas where he worked from home and helped care for their children including their third child, Solvej, who was born in Port Aransas. In 2022 he left Halliburton and moved to Verdun Petroleum where he continued to enjoy the challenges of working in the oil fields of South Texas.
During his spare time, if Peter couldn't be fishing, he liked to hunt with his brother, father, and friends, or shop at any Central Market. He enjoyed cooking, and his table was always filled with great food, much laughter, good conversation, and many guests. There was nothing he liked better than making a giant paella for his family and friends. He lovingly made bento box lunches for his children that were works of art.
Peter's children will always remember the many days he spent with them playing on the beach, fishing in the bay, looking for shells and stone crabs, spotting turtles, and enjoying the lavish picnic lunch he packed for their adventures.
Always a student of current events and history, he would shock you with obscure historical facts and race to tell you the very latest bit of news.
This past summer he had great fun participating in several deep-sea bill fish tournaments with his friends as he had in past summers.
Peter was preceded in death by his grandparents, H. Perry Gainey, and Georgeanna and Sam Greer. He is survived by his wife Jilliann Gainey, his three children: Mae Amelia, Samuel, and Solvej; parents Cassie and Mark Gainey; his brother Matthew Gainey and wife Katherine, their children Gigi and Greer; many beloved aunts, uncles and cousin; and one amazing grandmother, Sissy Gainey.
There will be a private family service for Peter in San Antonio and a memorial for him in Port Aransas in October.
He poured his heart into life and is dearly missed by his family and many friends.
