Raymond Hernandez Obituary

January 6, 1938 - December 27, 2016
Dr. Raymond H. Hernandez, Jr., 78, passed away peacefully from cancer-related illness on December 27, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. He was born to Raymond Hernandez and Minerva Cavazos Hernandez on January 6, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Hernandez is remembered by his beloved wife, children and grandchildren as fun-loving, generous, hard-working, and for his driving curiosity about how things work. He loved solving technical challenges. He set high academic standards for himself along his path from Thomas Jefferson High School (class of 1956), St. Mary's University and Tulane Medical School. In his 49 years of private practice, he constantly strove to further his skills and knowledge in medicine. He was board certified in Family Practice throughout his career, passing his board exam seven times. He proudly served as captain in the US Army during the Vietnam era.

His involvement in scientific research began when he was in college at St. Mary's University. He developed a fascination for chemistry under the rigorous tutelage of his mentors, Brother Charles Cummiskey and Dr. Leonard Axelrod. To help pay for school, he worked at the Southwest Research Institute. Some of his research was in the study of hibernation, an area of great interest in the early space-age era.

Apart from medicine, his great passion was his ranch. It was here he spent some of the happiest times of his life. He shared his love of hunting deer, fossils, and artifacts with his wife, family and friends. In the early days, he let his children name the newborn Simmental cattle. He loved driving his tractors, plowing the fields and baling hay. In the 1970's, he was part of a group that conducted research in techniques for embryo transplantation in cattle. For many years he also had a place at Medina Lake, where his sense of adventure led him to waterskiing and parasailing.

A dedicated family physician for over 50 years, Dr. Hernandez was known by his colleagues and patients as a compassionate and caring physician. He practiced medicine with a zeal and commitment that will be sorely missed by his patients who were used to him going the extra mile for their medical care.

He is preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Minerva Hernandez, his brothers Roland and Richard Hernandez and his sister Minerva.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years Dolores Sarro Hernandez, son Dr. Raymond Hernandez III (Valerie Veve), daughters Denise (Lauge Fastrup) and Lisa (Will Hajek), grandchildren Larissa and Liana Hernandez, Monica, Jens and Thomas Fastrup, Ryon, Ryleigh and Reese Hajek, brother Dr. Roger Hernandez (Marie), nieces Jan Hernandez, Julie Addison (Rodger), Jody Wright (Glenn), Liz Sarro Douglas (James), nephew John Mark Sarro and many beloved cousins, friends, and colleagues.

Visitation will be at Porter Loring Mortuary (McCullough) on Monday, January 2, 2017 from 6 - 8 pm with a rosary at 7 pm. Mass will be at St. Matthew's Catholic Church on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 1:30 pm. Interment at Fort Sam Houston will begin at 10:00 am on Wednesday, January 4th. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org . You are invited to sign the guestbook at www.porterloring.com .

My condolences on your loss of a beloved family member. Dr. Hernandez was my Mom's doctor for many years, and she always took me to be seen by him whenever I got sick. When I started working he was my primary care doctor. Mom always spoke very highly of him, once he became my doctor I realized why. He was always very thorough in assessing any ailment I came in with. He was a gifted doctor, I'm certain all of his patients miss him. May your memories of him live on in your heart. May you feel God's presence, love, and comfort. The feelings you have when you lose a parent don't go away, it always seems like it was just yesterday though many years may have passed. My deepest sympathy to all the Hernandez Family.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Hernandez passing. My family were long time patients of his since the days he had his office on French Pl. He sent flowers when my father passed away in 1997. He was truly a physician that would go the extra mile for his patients and always made you feel important. Thank you Dr. Hernandez, you will be missed.

I am so very sorry to hear of Dr. Hernandez's passing. My family have been patients of his since the mid 1970's. He treated myself, my grandparents, my aunts, uncles, and my parents. Words cannot properly express our love and esteem for him. He always would mention how he loved my mother's name because it was the same as his mother's. I loved hearing stories of his children, his grandchildren and his beloved ranch. What a wonderful man. What a wonderful doctor. My mom and he were being treated at the same Cancer Center. The last time I ran into him in the halls, he was smiling and in very good spirits. This last moment with is how I will remember him. Our deepest condolences to Mrs. Hernandez, his children and the rest of his family.

I was saddened by this news. Dr. Hernandez was my landlord, but he was mostly my friend. He and his beautiful wife took such great care of my daughters and myself while we lived above his office. He took excellent care of his patients, he will be remembered for his service to the community. He was a compassionate, kind, man who led by example. He will be dearly missed. My sincerest condolences to his family. He will be dearly missed, he was truly an angel on earth.

We are very saddened with the news of Cousin Ray's passing. He was a very, very remarkable man filled with lots of strength, perseverance, perfection, enthusiasm, motivation, dedication and a deep love to make our community an even greater and healthier place to be. His genius mind, curiosity and exceptional problem-solving was a trait he demonstrated throughout his entire lifetime. He was always a compassionate man who respected all with great love and integrity. We will always remember how passionately he carried out his mission to help mankind and his touch to deliver only the very best quality of care. Cousin Ray will be considerably missed by all of us but he has left a lifelong gift to our community. We will always remember his talents and well-roundedness and how superbly he balanced time to be involved with so much in our community and his family. Cousin Ray set high standards in everything he did and executed it successfully. His loving soul, determination and creativity in everything he did certainly passed on to his beautiful children and grandchildren. Dean and I will miss him deeply. We are grateful to him and our dear loving cousin Dolores who both were the ideal couple that worked together in the office for so many years and did it so superbly and efficiently. They were a true gold standard. Cousin Ray is a true legacy. Although he has gone on to another world, we are certain that he will be watchful over his family, friends and patients from above. Thank you Cousin Ray for being nothing more than the very very best!!!!! Thank you wonderful cousins for also making your remarkable contributions to our community and adding to its wonderful history.

I was so saddened to hear the news of Dr. Hernandez passing. So many of my best childhood memories are from weekends water skiing at Medina Lake, or hunting and riding motorcycles at the ranch with the Hernandez family. We will all miss him greatly.

Today is my cousin Ray's birthday, and I am just learning of his passing. I am shocked and saddened and heartbroken for my cousins. I always appreciated the embrace of familia when I would get to San Antonio and the kindness that Ray and Lita always showed us in our infrequent visits. I add my prayers to lift his soul in heaven above, and to solace Lita and family. It is heartwarming to read of the love of his patients and colleagues. His Aunt Gloria would want to give him another hug and remind him she was also his babysitter. We love you and commend you to the Lord.

Dear Dr. Hernandez, My life was so much richer for having known you and the life experiences we shared. You were like an uncle to me. You welcomed me and my family with open arms all these years. Only now do I realize what an influence you had on me and the man I became. I have never met a man who possessed so much intelligence yet never looked down on anyone. By your example, I learned that hard work leads to success, dedication to family leads to happiness, and healing the sick is the most noble profession of all. Thank you.

My condolences to the Hernandez family! Dr Hernandez was my doctor for 26+ years and my families. He always made his patients feel like family and took the best care of them. I have not been able to find a doctor like Dr Hernandez who gave his patients 100% of his time and treated their health condition as if it were his own. Prayers of comfort being sent to his lovely family! God Bless You!

I learned this morning of his passing. I regret not attending his rosary. We always considered him as family. My mom was his patient since she was 14 years old and I was his until he closed his practice. Dr. Hernandez was very much a part of our lives. He told my mom she was pregnant with me. I am now 43. To this day, we talk about him. It's hard to believe he is gone. I will never forget seeing him at patient's funerals. It's not often this happens. Dr. Hernandez will always be in our hearts. He healed us many times. We owe our lives and well being to him. Love him forever.

Dr. Hernandez, was our doctor for many years. He was a doctor who you could talked to and get the straight answers. I was the lady that made him the shrimp gumbo, that he loved so much. He told me that it was like he was at Tulane again. He will be missed by all. Our prayers are with his family.

"Papa loved to joke. He was always eager to learn us something new and to keep us busy, never a dull moment. Even though he often had a tight schedule, he would somehow find the extra time for going to the ranch with us, and for that I'm grateful. Our good times at the ranch, the coast or at home, will be missed, but not forgotten. Rest in peace, Papa"

Doctor Raymond H. Hernandez Jr. brought me into this world nearly 49 years ago, and unlike today, after he delivered me he continued to care for me until the day I enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1989 and left San Antonio. The level of care that he provided to me was amazing, and I have very fond memories of seeing Doctor Hernandez throughout those years. To this day, no physician has ever measured up to Doctor Hernandez; no one has ever come close. For me he was more than my Doctor, he was like family. He was that fun-loving Tio you grew up with who told you a silly joke, was someone who took the time to hear about what was going on in your life, and always offered advice to ensure you had a happier and healthier life as he genuinely cared for you, your wellbeing, and your spirit. I remember him being so very proud of his children, specifically his son who was in Medical School at the time. Doctor Hernandez used to display all their grades on the receptionist's window letting everyone know that his children were following his example of hard work, dedication, and academic excellence. Doctor Hernandez was a great man, a dedicated father, a loving husband, and an amazing Doctor who will be missed by all. Thank you Doctor Hernandez for bringing me into this world and caring for my family and me.

An inspiration that I'll always look up to. Couldn't have been more fortunate than to have a grandfather like him and for who I owe so much. He was loving, caring and had a sense of humor that never failed to make anyone smile or laugh. Almost every time we drove out to the ranch and entered Helotes, he would act as if 'the car' was forcibly making him steer away and drive into Dairy Queen. Burgers and Ice cream was a never-endning hit there. Well played Doc, and thank you for everything. Rest in peace.

Our deepest condolences to the Hernandez family. May Dr. Hernandez rest in peace and may the joyful memories bring you comfort. Dr. Hernandez was a very caring, loving, and compassionate husband, father and physician. God will be looking after him with loving arms. Dr. Hernandez was loved by so many and we pray this will bring the family comfort.

"Snapshots taken with the heart are never lost, they become an album full of wonderful memories that last forever". Our love and prayers are with Mrs. Dolores (Lita) Hernandez and the family.
We too have very fond memories of him, especially since I managed his practice for 17 years, and had two children while under his employment. Dr. Hernandez took care of my children and husband of 45 long, glorious years. My husband is proud to say that he was the last patient he saw at his Howard Street office.
There was not a day in his medical office that he did not mention his loving wife and children. It was for his family and patients that we, as his staff, worked long hours with him. In fact, he was the first physician in San Antonio to have an on-line computer for which we did computerized billing back in the early 1970's, and the first who had his in-house laboratory for which his loving wife, being a Licensed Laboratory Technologist, made sure that all of the lab equipment was calibrated and working efficiently.
God Bless you Dr. Hernandez. May you rest in peace. We will continue to pray for all of you. Much love sent your way. God be with you all.

My condolences to the family for your loss. Dr. Hernandez was our family doctor for as long as I can remember. I remember when I was 16, I cut my eyebrow and it needed stitches. We drove to the Baptist Hospital and Dr. Hernandez met us there to stitch me up. He took great care of my parents for so many years and was on a first name basis with my parents and sisters. My mother never did anything without consulting Dr. Hernandez first! May perpetual light shine upon him.

I became a patient of Dr Hernandez in the late 1960's and eventually most of my elderly family were patients too. As the obituary reads, he knew a lot about medicine because he was open minded about his profession. I'm sorry for his loss to the medical community and to his family. May Dr. Raymond Hernandez, Jr. rest in peace.

Dr. Hernandez was a true humanitarian, a man of great medical knowledge, humane, practical, and very caring. He had a loyal "following" of patients, very many persons of all walks of life.He treated every individual as if he/she were the only one. He was a man of integrity and genuine goodness who applied these qualities to the profession of medicine. Anybody who knew Dr H. benefitted from him and will remember him always.

Goodbye Papa, you have been a fantastic father in law, a true friend. You were a renaissance man with knowledge and interest in all corners of life. Never did you stop being curious and a endless flow of new gadgets always came your way. But most of all, you were truly man wise with a genuine interest in people. Being a doctor was not only a 9 to five job, it was a life long daily commitment to make a difference for so many. The ranch was your sanctuary and we had so many great times out there hunting, birding, building, repairing, or just enjoyning good peoples company. The annual Hernandez family trip to the Texas coast did never fail to be a blast. You and Dolores spoiled us rotten. The memory of you will live on in our hearts.
